The influence of the electron κ - distributions on the differential emission measure (DEM) of the prominence-corona transition region (PCTR) derived from observed line intensities has been investigated. An important consequence of the κ - distribution is formation of the emission lines in much wider temperature ranges. The implications for the formation temperature of the observed SDO/AIA band emissions are shown.

The system of accretion disk and black hole is usually considered as the central engine of Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs). It is usually thought that the disk in the central engine of GRBs is the advection-dominated accretion disk, which is developed from a massive (mass Mdisk) torus at radius rdisk. We find a positive correlation between the isotropic gamma-ray energy Eiso and duration (so-called T90) for GRBs. We interpret this correlation within the advection-dominated accretion disk model, associating Eiso and T90 with Mdisk and viscous timescale respectively.

Pulsars are potentially the most remarkable physical laboratories we will ever use. Although in many senses they are extremely clean systems there are a large number of instabilities and variabilities seen in the emission and rotation of pulsars. These need to be recognised in order to both fully understand the nature of pulsars, and to enable their use as precision tools for astrophysical investigations. Here I describe these effects, discuss the wide range of timescales involved, and consider the implications for precision pulsar timing.

We present an overview of the latest results from the PdBI Arcsecond Whirlpool Survey (PAWS, PI: E. Schinnerer), which has mapped CO(1-0) emission in the nearby grand-design spiral galaxy M51 at 40pc resolution. Our data are sensitive to GMCs above 105 M⊙, allowing the construction of the largest GMC catalog to date – containing over 1500 objects – using the CPROPS algorithm (Rosolowsky & Leroy 2006). In the inner disk of M51, the properties of the CO emission show significant variation that can be linked to the dynamical environment in which the molecular gas is located. We find that dynamically distinct regions host clouds with different properties and exhibit different GMC mass spectra, as well as distinct patterns of star formation. To understand how this sensitivity to environment emerges, we consider the role of pressure on GMC stabilization (including shear and star formation feedback-driven turbulence). We suggest that, in the presence of significant external pressure, streaming motions driven by the spiral arm can act to reduce the surface pressure on clouds. The resulting stabilization impacts the global pattern of star formation and can account for the observed non-monotonic radial dependence of the gas depletion time. Our findings have implications for the observed scatter in the standard GMC relations and extragalactic star formation laws.

We investigate the evolution of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) from redshift z ~ 1.6 to z = 0. We upgrade the hierarchical semi-analytic model of Croton et al. (2006) with a new spectro-photometric model that produces realistic galaxy spectra, making use of the Maraston (2005) stellar populations and a new recipe for the dust extinction. We compare the model predictions of the K-band luminosity evolution and the J-K, V-I and I-K colour evolution with a series of datasets, including Collins et al. (Nature, 2009) who argued that semi-analytic models based on the Millennium simulation cannot reproduce the red colours and high luminosity of BCGs at z > 1. We show instead that the model is well in range of the observed luminosity and correctly reproduces the colour evolution of BCGs in the whole redshift range up to z ~ 1.6. We argue that the success of the semi-analytic model is in large part due to the implementation of a more sophisticated spectro-photometric model. An analysis of the model BCGs shows an increase in mass by a factor 2-3 since z ~ 1, and star formation activity down to low redshifts. While the consensus regarding BCGs is that they are passively evolving, we argue that this conclusion is affected by the degeneracy between star formation history and stellar population models used in SED-fitting, and by the inefficacy of toy-models of passive evolution to capture the complexity of real galaxies, especially those with rich merger histories like BCGs. Following this argument, we also show that in the semi-analytic model, the BCGs show a realistic mix of stellar populations, and that these stellar populations are mostly old. In addition, the age-redshift relation of the model BCGs follows that of the Universe, meaning that given their merger history and star formation history, the ageing of BCGs is always dominated by the ageing of their stellar populations. In a ΛCDM Universe, we define such evolution as ‘passive in the hierarchical sense’.

Water masers are good tracers of high-mass star-forming regions. Water maser VLBI observations provide a good probe for studying high-mass star formation and galactic structure. We plan to make a blind survey toward the northern Galactic plane in future years using the 25 m radio telescope of the Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory. We will select some water maser sources discovered in the survey and perform high resolution observations to study the gas kinematics close to high-mass protostars.

We use a 2.5-dimensional, fully thermodynamically and magnetohydrodynamically compatible model to imitate the formation process of normal polarity prominences on top of initially linear force-free arcades above photospheric neutral lines. In magnetic arcades hosting chromospheric, transition region, and coronal plasma, we perform a series of numerical simulations to do a parameter survey for multi-dimensional evaporation-condensation prominence models. The investigated parameters include the fixed angle of the magnetic arcade, the strength and spatial range of the localized chromospheric heating.

Recent high-resolution observations show that protoplanetary disks have various kinds of structural properties or inhomogeneities. These are the consequence of a mixture of a number of physical and chemical processes taking place in the disks. Here, we discuss the results of our comprehensive investigations on how disk inhomogeneities affect planetary migration. We demonstrate that disk inhomogeneities give rise to planet traps - specific sites in protoplanetary disks at which rapid type I migration is halted. We show that up to three types of traps (heat transitions, ice lines and dead zones) can exist in a single disk, and that they move differently as the disk accretion rate decreases with time. We also demonstrate that the position of planet traps strongly depends on stellar masses and disk accretion rates. This indicates that host stars establish preferred (initial) scales of their planetary systems. Finally, we discuss the possible observational signatures of disk inhomogeneities.

A meteorological data assimilation system has been developed recently for analyzing measurements of temperature and dust opacity on Mars and has been successfully applied in several studies (e.g. Montabone et al. 2005, Lewis et al. 2007) to study various atmospheric phenomena. A more sophisticated data assimilation system, now with full dust transport incorporated, is becoming available to represent more accurately and realistically the physical transport of dust.

It is conjectured that magnetic configurations may be characterized by the embedded invariants which are extracted from their topological textures. Hence, experimentally observed magnetic structures can be classified by the invariants of the elementary building blocks of the 3-D structures - prime knots. These unique invariants may describe the magnetic configurations in ion drop-outs in solar impulsive events, in photospheric flux ropes carried into the interplanetary medium by the solar wind, and can affect the decay rates for complex magnetic configurations.

X-ray and Sunyaev–Zeldovich effect (SZE) observations of galaxy clusters can be used to measure their distances independently of the cosmic distance ladder. We have determined the distance to 38 clusters of galaxies in the redshift range 0.14 ≤ z ≤ 0.89 using X-ray data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and SZE data from the Owens Valley Radio Observatory and the Berkeley–Illinois–Maryland Association interferometric arrays. We measure a Hubble constant of H0 = 76.9+3.9−3.4+10.0−8.0 km s−1 Mpc−1 (statistical followed by systematic uncertainties at 68% confidence) for an ΩM=0.3, ΩΛ=0.7 cosmology. Our determination of the Hubble parameter in the distant Universe agrees with measurements from the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project that probed the nearby Universe.

The Hubble constant can be determined from the time delay of gravitationally lensed systems. We adopt Te Ve S as the relativistic version of Modified Newtonian Dynamics to study gravitational lensing phenomena and evaluate the Hubble constant from the derived time-delay formula. We test our method on observed quasar lensing published in the literature. Three candidates are suitable for our study, HE 2149-2745, FBQ J0951+2635, and SBS 0909+532.

SMA observations of molecular gas and dust in nearby galactic centers are presented to showcase remarkable ISM properties including warm to very hot gas, molecular clouds producing massive star clusters, and mechanical feedback through bubbles and outflows.

The upper atmosphere of Venus is not shielded by planetary magnetic field from direct interaction with the solar wind. The interaction of shocked solar wind and the ionosphere results in ionopause. Magnetic barrier, the inner region of dayside magnetosheath with the dominated magnetic pressure deflects the solar wind instead of the ionopause at solar maximum. Therefore, the structure and interaction of venusian ionosphere is very complex. Although the Venus Express (VEX) arrived at Venus in April 2006 provides more knowledge on the Venusian ionosphere and plasma environment, compared to Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) with about 14 years of observations, some important details are still unknown (e.g., long Venusian bow shock variations and effects). In this paper, the bow shock positions of Venus are determined and analyzed from magnetometer (MAG) and ASPERA-4 of the Venus Express mission from May 28, 2006 to August 17, 2010. Results show that the altitude of BS was mainly affected by SZA (solar zenith angle) and Venus bow shocks inbound and outbound are asymmetry.

This contribution summarises the first characterisation of the 12 μm warm dust (“exo-Zodi”) luminosity function around Sun-like stars, focussing on the dustiest systems that can be identified by the WISE mission (Kennedy & Wyatt 2013). We use the sample of main-sequence stars observed by Hipparcos within 150pc as an unbiased sample, and report the detection of six new warm dust candidates. The ages of five of these new sources are unknown, meaning that they may be sites of terrestrial planet formation or rare analogues of other old warm dust systems. We show that the dustiest old (> Gyr) systems such as BD+20 307 are 1 in 10,000 occurrences. Bright warm dust is much more common around young (<120 Myr) systems, with a ~1% occurrence rate. We show that a two component in situ model where all stars have initially massive warm disks and in which warm debris is also generated at some random time along the stars' main-sequence lifetime, perhaps due to a collision, can explain the observations. However, if all stars only have initially massive warm disks these would not be visible at Gyr ages, and random collisions on the main-sequence are too infrequent to explain the high disk occurrence rate for young stars. That is, neither component can explain the observations on their own. Despite these conclusions, we cannot rule out an alternative dynamical model in which comets are scattered in from outer regions because the distribution of systems with the appropriate dynamics is unknown. Our in situ model predicts that the fraction of stars with exo-Zodi bright enough to cause problems for future exo-Earth imaging attempts is at least roughly 10%, and is higher for populations of stars younger than a few Gyr. This prediction of roughly 10% also applies to old stars because bright systems like BD+20 307 imply a population of fainter systems that were once bright, but are now decaying through fainter levels. Our prediction should be strongly tested by the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer, which will provide valuable constraints and input for more detailed evolution models. A detection fraction lower than our prediction could indicate that the hot dust in systems like BD+20 307 has a cometary origin due to the quirks of the planetary dynamics. Population models of comet delivery need to be developed to help distinguish between different possible origins of warm dust.

We use a large sample of cosmological re-simulations of individual massive galaxies to investigate the origin of the strong increase in sizes and weak decrease of the stellar velocity dispersions since z = 2. At the end of a rapid early phase of star-formation, where stars are created from infalling cold gas, our simulated galaxies are all compact with projected half-mass radii of ≲ 1 kpc and central line-of-sight velocity dispersions of ≈ 262 km s−1. At lower redshifts (z < 2) those galaxies grow predominantly by the accretion of smaller stellar systems and evolve towards the observed local mass-size and mass-velocity dispersion relations. This loss of compactness is accompanied with an increase of central dark matter fractions. We find that the structural evolution of massive galaxies can be explained by frequent minor stellar mergers, which is the dominant mode of accretion for our simulated galaxies.

Ohm, Hall, and ambipolar diffusions in the partially ionized plasma are considered. The statement of Pandey & Wardle (2011,2012) that only Ohmic diffusion is capable of destroying the magnetic flux is not sufficiently correct due to the formal dependence of the magnetic diffusion on a frame of reference.

Highly symmetric double features observed in averaged pulsar profiles can be interpreted as the imprint of microscopic radiation beam characteristic of radiative mechanism operating in pulsar magnetosphere. The data put strong constraints on the possible radiation patterns, excluding entire classes of mechanisms, such as those based on parallel acceleration, or those that have complicated beams. Instead, several properties of double features (such as their symmetry, depth, shape, merging rate, large polarisation degree, and the association with bifurcated emission components) are consistent with the extraordinary-mode part of the curvature radiation beam. This shows that double notches are a clear signature of the curvature radiation process. We show that even with the emission process fixed, detailed modelling of double features remains a rather sophisticated and demanding task.

Intermediate polars (IPs) represent more than 70% of all cataclysmic variables (CVs) detected by INTEGRAL in hard X-ray. Nevertheless, only a quarter of all known IPs have been detected in this spectral band. This fact can be related to the activity state of these object ruled by changes in the mass accretion rate.

Stable long lived solar filaments during their lives can approach each other, merge, and form circular structures. Since filaments follow large scale polarity inversion lines of the photospheric magnetic field, their evolution reflects changes of the photospheric field distribution. On the other hand, filament interaction depends on their internal magnetic structure reviled in particular by filament chirality. Possibility of magnetic field line reconnection of neighbor filaments is discussed. Many examples of connectivity changes in a course of photospheric field evolution were found in our analysis of daily Hα filtergrams for the period of maximum activity of the solar cycle 23.
