The coupling between the convective region in the envelope and rotation can produce a surface latitudinal differential rotation that may induce changes of the stellar geometry and on the spectral line profiles that it may be scrutinized spectroscopically and by interferometry.

We obtained the first spectral predictions from a simulation of the Galactic Center to include radiative processes internally. We performed simulations with and without cooling, with and without spin, and for different initial configurations of the magnetic field, in order to test the effect on jet launching and inner accretion disk characteristics. By exploring parameter space, we will attempt to place new constraints on the controversial question about the presence or not of a jet from Sgr A*, as well as study jet launching in general. We have shown that, as expected, the spin of the BH affects the structure of the jet. The presence of cooling also strongly influences the inner structure of the accretion disk and therefore affects jet launching. These results show that radiative cooling is not negligible, as is usually assumed for the very underluminous supermassive BH, Sgr A*. On the contrary, the inclusion of cooling has a very visible influence on the accretion disk. Furthermore it creates an important difference in the resulting spectra.

In the quiet Sun, convective motions form a characteristic granular pattern, with broad upflows enclosed by a network of narrow downflows. Magnetic fields tend to accumulate in the intergranular lanes, forming localised flux concentrations. One of the most plausible explanations for the appearance of these quiet Sun magnetic features is that they are generated and maintained by dynamo action resulting from the local convective motions at the surface of the Sun. Motivated by this idea, we describe high resolution numerical simulations of nonlinear dynamo action in a (fully) compressible, non-rotating layer of electrically-conducting fluid. The dynamo properties depend crucially upon various aspects of the fluid. For example, the magnetic Reynolds number (Rm) determines the initial growth rate of the magnetic energy, as well as the final saturation level of the dynamo in the nonlinear regime. We focus particularly upon the ways in which the Rm-dependence of the dynamo is influenced by the level of stratification within the domain. Our results can be related, in a qualitative sense, to solar observations.

The business meeting of commission 22 was held at the room 5 in the SulAmerica Convention Center in Rio de Janeiro(14:00-15:30). Fifteen people attended at this meeting:J.Borovička, E.Bowell, G.Consolmagno, D.Green, P. Jenniskens, A. Pellinen-Wannberg, R. Rudawska, J. Watanabe, J. Zhu, P. H. A. Hasselmann, F. Ostroviski, D. A. Oszkiewicz, W. Thuillot, P. Mahajani, and A. Sule. This meeting was managed by Junichi Watanabe, the current C22 Vice-President. The summary of the meeting is described.

Independent of the normal solar cycle, a decrease in the sunspot magnetic field strength has been observed using the Zeeman-split 1564.8nm Fe I spectral line at the NSO Kitt Peak McMath-Pierce telescope. Corresponding changes in sunspot brightness and the strength of molecular absorption lines were also seen. This trend was seen to continue in observations of the first sunspots of the new solar Cycle 24, and extrapolating a linear fit to this trend would lead to only half the number of spots in Cycle 24 compared to Cycle 23, and imply virtually no sunspots in Cycle 25.

We examined synoptic observations from the NSO Kitt Peak Vacuum Telescope and initially (with 4000 spots) found a change in sunspot brightness which roughly agreed with the infrared observations. A more detailed examination (with 13,000 spots) of both spot brightness and line-of-sight magnetic flux reveals that the relationship of the sunspot magnetic fields with spot brightness and size remain constant during the solar cycle. There are only small temporal variations in the spot brightness, size, and line-of-sight flux seen in this larger sample. Because of the apparent disagreement between the two data sets, we discuss how the infrared spectral line provides a uniquely direct measurement of the magnetic fields in sunspots.

Two classes of spectro-imagers are available, the first one, usually based on grisms, allows to cover intermediate fields of view and wide spectral ranges (decreasing when the spectral resolution increases) while the second one, usually based on tunable filters (like Fabry-Perot), is generally able to cover larger fields of view but on narrow spectral ranges (also depending on the spectral resolution). Both families of instrument have access to low or high spectral resolution and are used in seeing limited conditions for observing nearby galaxies. Spectro-imagers provide data cubes consisting of a spectrum for each spatial sample on the sky. From these spectra, using both emission and absorption lines, combined with the continuum emission, the history of the stars and the interstellar medium in nearby galaxies, encoded in different physical quantities, such as chemical abundances, kinematics properties, is deciphered. Only a few surveys of galaxies using spectro-imagers have been led up to now and mainly using 4-m class or smaller telescopes. This includes the case of nearby late-type galaxies surveyed in the optical. Two large surveys of some 600 galaxies each have just been launched, one on the Magellan 6m telescope (CGS) and the other one on the William Herschel 4.2m telescope (CALIFA). Surveys containing a smaller number of galaxies have been conducted elsewhere, for instance on the WIYN and Calar Alto 3.5m telescopes (the DiskMass survey, 146 galaxies); on the ESO and CFHT 3.6m telescopes (CIGALE, 269 galaxies); on the OHP 1.92m telescope (GHASP, 203 galaxies); on the mont Mégantic 1.6m telescope (107 galaxies) and on the San Pedro Mártir 2.1m telescope (79 galaxies). Other programs surveying less then 50 galaxies have been also led, like VENGA, SAURON, PINGS or GHaFaS. The scientific drivers of these surveys are broad, they span from the study of the structural properties, star formation histories, AGN content, to mass profiles and uncertainties in rotation-curve decompositions, nature and formation of bulges and disks components.

I review what has been learnt so far regarding the origin of stellar properties from numerical simulations of the formation of groups and clusters of stars. In agreement with observations, stellar properties are found to be relatively robust to variations of initial conditions in terms of molecular cloud structure and kinetics, as long as extreme initial conditions (e.g. strong central condensation, weak or no turbulence) and small-scale driving are avoided, but properties may differ between bound and unbound clouds. Radiative feedback appears crucial for setting stellar masses, even for low-mass stars, while magnetic fields can provide low star formation rates.

We report the detection of a planetary companion around HIP 13044, a metal-poor red horizontal branch star belonging to a stellar halo stream that results from the disruption of an ancient Milky Way satellite galaxy. The detection is based on radial velocity observations with FEROS at the 2.2-m MPG/ESO telescope. The periodic radial velocity variation of P = 16.2 days can be distinguished from the periods of the stellar activity indicators. We computed a minimum planetary mass of 1.25 Mjup and an orbital semimajor axis of 0.116 AU for the planet. This discovery is unique in three aspects: First, it is the first planet detection around a star with a metallicity much lower than few percent of the solar value; second, the planet host star resides in a stellar evolutionary stage that is still unexplored in the exoplanet surveys; third, the planetary system HIP 13044 most likely has an extragalactic origin in a disrupted former satellite of the Milky Way.

Let me first express my warmest acknowledgements to Cesare Barbieri for having taken the initiative of convening this symposium. These two days offered a unique opportunity to celebrate the scientific achievements and the legacy of Galileo Galilei. It allowed not only celebrating the scientist but also the philosopher and the human being. It was a fantastic journey in the past, present and future exploration of our universe and a fantastic retrospection into the Renaissance world which no better city than Padova would be able to offer. During these two days we could listen to a well balanced and well prepared set of excellent papers and presentations. All participants should be congratulated for their very active interactions during the discussions in the aula and also during coffee and lunch breaks.

In recent analyses of numerical simulation and solar wind dataset, the idea that the magnetic discontinuities may be related to intermittent structures that appear spontaneously in MHD turbulence has been explored in details. These studies are consistent with the hypothesis that discontinuity events founds in the solar wind might be of local origin as well, i.e. a by-product of the turbulent evolution of magnetic fluctuations.

Using simulations of 2D MHD turbulence, we are exploring a possible link between tangential discontinuities and magnetic reconnection. The goal is to develop numerical algorithms that may be useful for solar wind applications.

The presence of magnetic fields at the surfaces of many massive stars has been suspected for decades, to explain the observed properties and activity of OB stars. However, very few genuine high-mass stars had been identified as magnetic before the advent of a new generation of powerful spectropolarimeters that has resulted in a rapid burst of precise information about the magnetic properties of massive stars. During this talk, I will briefly review modern methods used to diagnose magnetic fields of higher-mass stars, and summarize our current understanding of the magnetic properties of OB stars.

Filamentary structure is a fundamental property of the magnetized solar plasma. Recent high-resolution observations and numerical simulations have revealed close links between the filamentary structures and plasma dynamics in large-scale solar phenomena, such as sunspots and magnetic network. A new emerging paradigm is that the mechanisms of the filamentary structuring and large-scale organization are natural consequences of turbulent magnetoconvection on the Sun. We present results of 3D radiative MHD large-eddy simulations (LES) of magnetic structures in the turbulent convective boundary layer of the Sun. The results show how the initial relatively weak and uniformly distributed magnetic field forms the filamentary structures, which under certain conditions gets organized on larger scales, creating stable long-living magnetic structures. We discuss the physics of magnetic self-organization in the turbulent solar plasma, and compare the simulation results with observations.

The generation of magnetic flux in the solar interior and its transport to the outer solar atmosphere will be in the focus of solar physics research for the next decades. One key-ingredient is the process of magnetic flux emergence into the solar photosphere, and the reorganization to form the magnetic phenomena of active regions like sunspots and pores.

On July 4, 2009, we observed a region of emerging magnetic flux, in which a proto-spot without penumbra forms a penumbra within some 4.5 hours. This process is documented by multi-wavelength observations at the German VTT: (a) imaging, (b) data with high resolution and temporal cadence acquired in Fe I 617.3 nm with the 2D imaging spectropolarimter GFPI, and (c) scans with the slit based spectropolarimeter TIP in Fe I 1089.6 nm. MDI contiuum maps and magnetograms are used to follow the formation of the proto-spot, and the subsequent evolution of the entire active region.

During the formation of the penumbra, the area and the magnetic flux of the spot increases. The additional magnetic flux is supplied by the adjacent region of emerging magnetic flux: As emerging bipole separate, the poles of the spot polarity migrate towards the spot, and finally merge with it. As more and more flux is accumulated, a penumbra forms. From inversions we infer maps for the magnetic field and the Doppler velocity (being constant along the line-of-sight). We calculate the magnetic flux of the forming spot and of the bipole footpoints that merge with the proto-spot. We witness the onset of the Evershed flow and the associated enhance of the field inclination as individual penumbral filaments form. Prior to the formation of individual penumbral sectors we detect the existence of ‘counter’ Evershed flows. These in-flows turn into the classical radial Evershed outflows as stable penumbra segments form.

Commission 51 met on August 12, 2009. Outgoing President Alan Boss chaired the meeting, and there were several dozen members present, including incoming President William Irvine, incoming Vice President Pascale Ehrenfreund, and outgoing Past President Karen Meech. Commission 51 (C51) was re-authorized for a term of six more years at the 2006 Prague General Assembly of the IAU, and hence comes up for renewal at the 2012 IAU General Assembly in Beijing, China.

This contribution gives a short overview of the MeerKAT Karoo Array Telescope, the South African Square Kilometre Array Precursor. Some of the key specification and HI emission line science for MeerKAT are described.

As the number of known transiting planets from ground-based surveys passes the 100 mark, it is becoming possible to perform meaningful statistical analyses on their physical properties. Caution is needed in their interpretation, because subtle differences in survey strategy can lead to surprising selection effects affecting the distributions of planetary orbital periods and radii, and of host-star metallicity. Despite these difficulties, the planetary mass-radius relation appears to conform more or less to theoretical expectations in the mass range from Saturns to super-Jupiters. The inflated radii of many hot Jupiters indicate that environmental factors can have a dramatic effect on planetary structure, and may even lead to catastrophic loss of the planetary envelope under extreme irradiation. High-precision radial velocities and secondary-eclipse timing are yielding eccentricity measurements of exquisite precision. They show some hot Jupiters to be in almost perfectly circular orbits, while others remain slightly but significantly eccentric.

Cosmos++ (Anninos et al. 2005) is one of the first fully relativistic magneto-hydro-dynamical (MHD) codes that can self-consistently account for radiative cooling, in the optically thin regime. As the code combines a total energy conservation formulation with a radiative cooling function, we have now the possibility to produce spectra energy density from these simulations and compare them to data. In this paper, we present preliminary results of spectra calculated using the same cooling functions from 2D Cosmos++ simulations of the accretion flow around Sgr A*. The simulation parameters were designed to roughly reproduce Sgr A*'s behavior at very low (10−8–10−7 M⊙/yr) accretion rate, but only via spectra can we test that this has been achieved.

Three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic simulations of shell oxygen burning by Meakin & Arnett (2007b) exhibit bursty, recurrent fluctuations in turbulent kinetic energy. These are shown to be due to a global instability in the convective region, which has been suppressed in simulations of stellar evolution which use mixing-length theory (MLT). Quantitatively similar behavior occurs in the model of a convective roll (cell) of Lorenz (1963), which is known to have a strange attractor that gives rise to random fluctuations in time. An extension of the Lorenz model, which includes Kolmogorov damping and nuclear burning, is shown to exhibit bursty, recurrent fluctuations like those seen in the 3D simulations. A simple model of a convective layer (composed of multiple Lorenz cells) gives luminosity fluctuations which are suggestive of irregular variables (red giants and supergiants, see Schwarzschild (1975). Details and additional discussion may be found in Arnett & Meakin (2011).

Apparent inconsistencies between Arnett, Meakin, & Young (2009) and Nordlund, Stein, & Asplund (2009) on the nature of convective driving have been resolved, and are discussed.

By pure coincidence, for the next few years the orbit of the satellite Namaka around the dwarf planet Haumea (formerly 2003 EL61) is nearly edge-on to our line-of-sight. This type of configuration does not last for long, because as Haumea travels around the sun in its 283 year orbit, we continuously see the Haumean system from different angles. It is only edge-on at the angle we see right now, and at the angle it will again be in 141 years – half of a Haumean year from now. In addition to being an interesting coincidence, the fact that the orbit of Namaka is nearly edge-on provides the opportunity to obtain an enormous amount of information about the Haumean system. We present measurements of the timing of these events observed from Laboratrio Nacional de Astrofsica (LNA), partner in an international campaign to observe these events from the most suitable mid-sized telescopes.

It is possible to extract, from the observations, distribution functions of the birth dynamical properties of a stellar population, and to also infer that these are quite invariant to the physical conditions of star formation. The most famous example is the stellar IMF, and the initial binary population (IBP) seems to follow suit. A compact mathematical formulation of the IBP can be derived from the data. It has three broad parts: the IBP of the dominant stellar population (0.08–2M⊙), the IBP of the more-massive stars and the IBP of brown dwarfs. These three mass regimes correspond to different physical regimes of star formation but not to structure in the IMF. With this formulation of the IBP it becomes possible to synthesize the stellar-population of whole galaxies.
