We introduce a ‘double’ version of Γ-convergence, which we have named ‘double Γ-convergence’, and apply it to obtain the Γ-limit of double-perturbed energy functionals as p → 1 and p → +∞, respectively. The limit of (p, q)-type capacity as p → 1 and p → +∞, respectively, is also obtained in this manner.

We investigate the global versions of the Kleinecke–Shirokov theorem for skew derivations in Banach algebras. Centralizing skew derivations on Banach algebras are also studied.

In this paper we obtain a sharp height estimate concerning compact hypersurfaces immersed into warped product spaces with some constant higher-order mean curvature and whose boundary is contained in a slice. We apply these results to draw topological conclusions at the end of the paper.

The aim of this paper is to present a sign-changing solution for a class of radially symmetric asymptotically linear Schrödinger equations. The proof is variational and the Ekeland variational principle is employed as well as a deformation lemma combined with Miranda’s theorem.

We classify generically transitive actions of semi-direct products on ℙ2. Motivated by the program to study the distribution of rational points on del Pezzo surfaces (Manin's conjecture), we determine all (possibly singular) del Pezzo surfaces that are equivariant compactifications of homogeneous spaces for semi-direct products .

In this paper we consider the existence of a positive solution to boundary-value problems with non-local nonlinear boundary conditions, the archetypical example being −y″(t) = λf(t,y(t)), t ∈ (0, 1), y(0) = H(φ(y)), y(1) = 0. Here, H is a nonlinear function, λ > 0 is a parameter and φ is a linear functional that is realized as a Lebesgue—Stieltjes integral with signed measure. By requiring φ to decompose in a certain way, we show that this problem has at least one positive solution for each λ ∈ (0, λ0), for a number λ0 > 0 that is explicitly computable. We also give a separate result that holds for all λ > 0.

Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. We consider the commuting variety of the nilradical of the Lie algebra of a Borel subgroup B of G. In case B acts on with only a finite number of orbits, we verify that is equidimensional and that the irreducible components are in correspondence with the distinguishedB-orbits in . We observe that in general is not equidimensional, and determine the irreducible components of in the minimal cases where there are infinitely many B-orbits in .

Let (E, ℱ) be a weakly compactly generated Frechet space and let ℱ0 be another weaker Hausdorff locally convex topology on E. Let X be an ℱ-bounded compact subset of (E, ℱ0). The ℱ0-closed convex hull of X in E is then ℱ0-compact. We also give a new proof, without using Riemann–Lebesgue-integrable (Birkoff-integrable) functions, with the result that if (E, ∥ · ∥) is any Banach space and ℱ0 is fragmented by ∥ · ∥, then the same result holds. Furthermore, the closure of the convex hull of X in ℱ0-topology and in the original topology of E is the same.

We develop the diffeomorphism invariant Colombeau-type algebra of nonlinear generalized functions in a modern and compact way. Using a unifying formalism for the local setting and on manifolds, the construction becomes simpler and more accessible than before.

We consider a natural generalization of symmetric Nakayama algebras, namely, symmetric special biserial algebras with at most one non-uniserial indecomposable projective module. We describe the basic algebras explicitly by quiver and relations, then classify them up to derived equivalence and up to stable equivalence of Morita type. This includes the weakly symmetric algebras of Euclidean type n, as studied by Bocian et al., as well as some algebras of dihedral type.

We compute the global log canonical thresholds of quasi-smooth well-formed complete intersection log del Pezzo surfaces of amplitude 1 in weighted projective spaces. As a corollary we show the existence of orbifold Kähler—Einstein metrics on many of them.

For the third-order differential equation y′″ = ƒ(t, y, y′, y″), where , questions involving ‘uniqueness implies uniqueness’, ‘uniqueness implies existence’ and ‘optimal length subintervals of (a, b) on which solutions are unique’ are studied for a class of two-point boundary-value problems.

We prove that every incidence graph of a finite projective plane allows a partitioning into incident point-line pairs. This is used to determine the order of the identity in the K0-group of so-called polygonal algebras associated with cocompact group actions on Ã2-buildings with three orbits. These C*-algebras are classified by the K0-group and the class of the identity in K0. To be more precise, we show that 2(q − 1) = 0, where q is the order of the links of the building. Furthermore, if q = 22l−1 with l ∈ ℤ, then the order of is q − 1.

We calculate the centralizers of elements, finite subgroups and virtually cyclic subgroups of Houghton’s group Hn. We discuss various Bredon (co)homological finiteness conditions satisfied by Hn including the Bredon (co)homological dimension and FPn conditions, which are analogues of the ordinary cohomological dimension and FPn conditions, respectively.

We prove continuity in generalized parabolic Morrey spaces of sublinear operators generated by the parabolic Calderón—Zygmund operator and by the commutator of this operator with bounded mean oscillation (BMO) functions. As a consequence, we obtain a global -regularity result for the Cauchy—Dirichlet problem for linear uniformly parabolic equations with vanishing mean oscillation (VMO) coefficients.

This paper obtains criteria for a Fano variety X defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero with normal crossing singularities to be smoothable. In particular, we show that X is smoothable by a flat deformation X → Δ with smooth total space X if and only if where D is the singular locus of X.

Let G be a finitely generated group with polynomial growth, and let ω be a weight, i.e. a sub-multiplicative function on G with positive values. We study when the weighted group algebra ℓ1 (G, ω) is isomorphic to an operator algebra. We show that ℓ1 (G, ω) is isomorphic to an operator algebra if ω is a polynomial weight with large enough degree or an exponential weight of order 0 < α < 1. We demonstrate that the order of growth of G plays an important role in this problem. Moreover, the algebraic centre of ℓ1 (G, ω) is isomorphic to a Q-algebra, and hence satisfies a multi-variable von Neumann inequality. We also present a more detailed study of our results when G consists of the d-dimensional integers ℤd or the three-dimensional discrete Heisenberg group ℍ3(ℤ). The case of the free group with two generators is considered as a counter-example of groups with exponential growth.

A long-standing conjecture of Faith in ring theory states that a left self-injective semi-primary ring A is necessarily a quasi-Frobenius ring. We propose a new method for approaching this conjecture, and prove it under some mild conditions; we show that if the simple A-modules are at most countably generated over a subring of the centre of A, then the conjecture holds. Also, the conjecture holds for algebras A over sufficiently large fields, i.e. if the cardinality of is larger than the dimension of the simple A-modules (or of A/Jac(A)). This effectively proves the conjecture in many situations, and we obtain several previously known results on this problem as a consequence.
