The X-ray powder diffraction patterns for two N-substituted tetrahydroquinolines are reported. N-(α-Chloroacetyl)-6-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-4-methylspiro[cyclohexane-1′,2(1H)quinoline], C18H24ClNO2, and N-(α-chloroacetyl)-6-chloro-3,4-dihydro-4-methylspiro[cyclohexane-1′,2(1H)-quinoline], C17H21Cl2NO are monoclinic, with refined unit cell parameters a=1.4471(3), b=0.9600(4), c=1.1948(3) nm, β=93.21(2)°, V=1.6573(6) nm3, Z=4, Dx=1.29 gcm−3, and a=1.4487(3), b=0.9878(2), c=1.1390(2) nm, β=91.66(2)°, V=1.6294(4) nm3, Z=4, and Dx=1.32 gcm−3, respectively, with space group P21/n (No. 14).

Recipes are given to assist in setting up rigid bodies for common molecules and coordination polyhedra, to define satellite groups, to perform rotations around arbitrary axes through the origin of the rigid body, and to refine intramolecular degrees of freedom under consideration of the special needs of powder diffraction. To the greatest possible extent, the notation follows that of the well known Rietveld refinement program GSAS (Larson and Von Dreele, 1994).

The powder diffraction pattern of the perovskite AgNbO3 has been measured using CuKα1 radiation with an incident beam focusing monochromator to eliminate the Kα2 component. Indexing the pattern shows that the multipartite cell is 2×2×4 times that of the pseudocubic subcell. Comparison is made with the diffraction pattern of NaNbO3, which has a similar multipartite unit cell. There are strong similarities, but close inspection shows that the structures are not isomorphous. The paper concludes with a discussion of the figure of merit FN for pseudosymmetric structures. It is suggested that two figures of merit be reported. The first should be the standard one using either all measured reflections or just the first 30. The proposed second figure of merit does not include any superlattice reflections. These superlattice reflections tend to be very weak, resulting in a low completeness factor and relatively large error in the measurement of their position. This effect produces an unrealistically low value of the standard figure of merit. By including only “main” reflections, i.e., those reflections that are common to both the low-symmetry and high-symmetry parent phase (if it exists), a much better estimate of the quality of the fitting of the measured diffraction pattern is obtained.

A new method is used in measuring the linear thermal expansion coefficients in composite consisting of a substrate Gd3Ga2Ga3O12 (GGG) and its epitaxial layer Y3Fe2Fe3O12 (YIG) within the temperature range 13.88 °C–32.50 °C. The results show that the thermal expansion coefficient of GGG in composite is larger than that of the GGG in single crystal; the thermal expansion coefficient of thick film YIG is also larger than that of thin film. The results also show that the thermal expansion coefficient of a composite consisting of film and its substrate can be measured by using a new method.

The title compound was identified as the major phase in a corrosion deposit by indexing its powder pattern, and locating an isostructural vanadium(II) compound in the NIST Crystal Data Identification File. The identity of the compound was confirmed by a Rietveld refinement. Hexaaquairon(II) trifluoromethanesulfonate crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/m, with a=18.6415(14), b=6.9291(5), c=6.5938(5) Å, β=104.742(6)°, V=823.68(10) Å3, and Z=2. The structure consists of alternating layers of octahedral hexaaquairon(II) cations and triflate anions. The cations and anions are linked into layers parallel to the bc plane by hydrogen bonds. Each water molecule donates two protons to sulfonate oxygens, and each sulfonate oxygen acts as an acceptor of two protons. A reference powder diffraction pattern is reported.

More than 10 000 inorganic structures based on both X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data were extracted from the ICSD database and analyzed considering overall trends, cell symmetries, occurrence of the space groups, complexity, precision and reliability of reported data. It was found that the major amount of structures belong to higher symmetries and have 2–5 atoms in the asymmetric unit. Less than 35% of the e.s.d.'s of atomic coordinates is ≤10−3 and 10−4 or better was reached in only 5% of cases. Approximately one-quarter of papers contain possibly inaccurate atomic coordinates or interatomic distances. A short review of journals publishing structures derived from powders is also given.

Three computer programs for Rietveld analysis DBWS-9411, HILL-93.06, and FULLPROF-3.1 have been tested and compared using data for two samples of different complexity, spinel, and anglesite. The investigation shows that results are “program dependent.” The obtained R indices for spinel are in the ranges 10.60%–13.26%(Rwp) and 3.15%–5.25%(RB). Similarly, the ranges for anglesite are 9.76%–14.06%(Rwp) and 2.15%–5.06%(RB). Some atom and displacement parameters are significantly different, too. In attempt to define the standard procedure for Rietveld analysis, three parameters, n, BKPOS, and RLIM were examined. It was found that the most appropriate values for them are: n=8–10, BKPOS=90°, and RLIM=40° 2θ. Using Fourier filtering for background modeling, significantly lower R indices were obtained in comparison to polynomial and interpolated background. At the same time the great numbers of atom and cell parameters agree within ±3σmax and e.s.d.'s were identical or lower than those achieved for polynomial and interpolated background. It was found that the function given by Bérar and Baldinozzi (1993) (J. Appl. Crystallogr. 26, 128–129) much better described asymmetric peak profiles at low 2θ angles. This function and Fourier filtering were implemented only in FULLPROF, which has more possibilities and some advantages over the other two programs. In addition, the peak shift parameters (sample displacement and transparency) were tested. It was shown that under present circumstances these parameters do not have much effect on atom parameters and R indices. However, differences in unit cell parameters were considerable greater, most probably because of the large correlation between zero-point, lattice, and peak shift parameters.

Chromite grains in ores from the Great Dyke, Zimbabwe, exhibit varying degrees of shearing when viewed by optical microscopy. High resolution diffraction data revealed that line broadening from powder samples of sheared chromites is largely due to two or more spinel phases with slightly different cell parameters, the number of phases increasing with the degree of shearing. The dominant or “parent” phase, with parameters ranging from 8.3123(2) to 8.2676(2) Å, constitutes 57% to 76% of most samples. The cell parameters of secondary phases are generally less than that of the parent phase by δa/a0 in the range −1.3 to −4.0×10−3, the difference again tending to increase with shearing. Most reflections for the parent phase are relatively sharp whereas those for the secondary phases exhibit line broadening that could be analyzed in terms of crystallike (domain) size and rms strain. The crystallite diameters, assuming spherical particles, are relatively large for the parent phases [260(2)–100(5) nm], while those for the secondary phases range from 165(70) to 70(25) nm. The rms strain is not large for any sample and is negligible or small for the unsheared and weakly sheared material. The microstrain in secondary phases is greater than that in the parent phase and tends to increase with shearing, the maximum rms strain being 1.6(3)×10−3. Two new forms of chromite in highly sheared material are reported, one with a slight (0.33%) tetragonal distortion and the other with a cell parameter of 17.561(2) Å, greater than that of normal spinel chromites by a factor of about 3/√2, and a lowering of symmetry from Fd3¯m to Fm3¯m. Changes in chemical composition, indicated by a range in cell parameter, are attributed to tectonics that affected much of the Great Dyke. The strain is partitioned between failure by brittle deformation of the chromite grains and stress-induced cation migration leading to cells with slightly different composition.

X-ray powder diffraction pattern for InN synthesized using a microwave plasma source of nitrogen is reported. The data were obtained with the help of an automated Bragg-Brentano diffractometer using Ni-filtered CuKα radiation. The lattice parameters for the wurtzite-type unit cell are ao=3.5378(1) Å, co=5.7033(1) Å. The calculated density is 6.921±0.002 g/cm3.

An Fe-containing deposit isolated from a commercial plant was identified by indexing its powder diffraction pattern, using the NIST Crystal Data Identification File to locate an isostructural Mn compound, and carrying out a successful Rietveld refinement. The principal phase in the deposit was confirmed to be bis(ethylammonium) tetrachloroiron(II). This compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca, with a=7.3291(6), b=7.2603(6), c=21.7544(8) Å, V=1157.59(14) Å, and Z=4. The structure consists of single perovskitelike layers of corner-sharing FeCl6 octahedra parallel to the ab plane, separated by bilayers of ethylammonium cations. The octahedra are tilted 4.4° with respect to the c-axis, and the layers are ruffled. The compound was apparently formed by reaction of the ethylamine corrosion inhibitor with Fe from the steel process vessel and chloride in the process stream.

The structure of the oxyphosphate Ni0.50TiO(PO4) has been determined ab initio from conventional X-ray powder diffraction data by the “heavy atom” method. The cell is monoclinic (space group P21/c, Z=4) with a=7.3830(5) Å, b=7.3226(5) Å, c=7.3444(5) Å, and β=120.233(6)°. Refinement of 46 parameters by the Rietveld method, using 645 reflexions, leads to cRwp=0.152, cRp=0.120, and RB=0.043. The structure of Ni0.50TiO(PO4) can be described as a TiOPO4 framework constituted by chains of tilted corner-sharing TiO6 octahedra running parallel to the c axis, crosslinked by phosphate tetrahedra and in which one-half of octahedral cavities created are occupied by Ni atoms. Ti atoms are displaced from the center of octahedra units in alternating long (2.231) and short (1.703 Å) Ti–O bonds along chains.

The structures of the solid solution series (Sr4−δCaδ)PtO6, with δ=0, 0.85(1), 2, and 3, have been investigated using the Rietveld refinement technique with laboratory X-ray powder diffraction data. A complete solid solution between Sr and Ca was confirmed to exist. These compounds crystallize in the rhombohedral space group R3¯c. The cell parameters of the series range from a of 9.4780(3) to 9.7477(1) Å, and c from 11.3301(4) to 11.8791(1) Å for δ from 3 to 0, respectively. The structure consists of chains of alternating trigonal prismatic (Sr, Ca)O6 and octahedral PtO6 units running parallel to the c axis. These chains are connected to each other via a second type of (Sr, Ca) ions, which are surrounded by eight oxygens, in a distorted square antiprismatic geometry. As Ca replaced Sr in Sr4PtO6, it was found to substitute preferentially in the smaller octahedral (Sr, Ca)1 site (6a) rather than at the eight-coordinate (Sr, Ca)2 site (18e). There appears to be an anomaly of cell parameters a and c at the compound Sr3.15Ca0.85PtO6. Their dependence on Ca content changes at δ≈1.00, where the Ca has fully replaced Sr in the 6a site. The substitution of Sr by Ca reduced the average (Sr, Ca)1–O length from 2.411 to 2.311 Å and (Sr, Ca)2–O from 2.659 to 2.570 Å as the composition varied from Sr4PtO6 to SrCa3PtO6. Reference X-ray powder diffraction patterns were prepared from the Rietveld refinement results for these members of the solid solution series. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of three of the samples (δ=0, 0.85, 2) show electronic transitions at low temperatures.

In order to exploit X-ray powder spectro-diffractometry, the program RIETAN-97ß for refining crystal structure and lattice parameters by the Rietveld method was modified extensively. The resulting software can be used to refine anomalous scattering factors, fr and fi, for specified crystallographic sites near the X-ray absorption edge of a particular element. The effectiveness of the modified software was tested by using powder diffraction patterns simulated by the original RIETAN-97ß software and a series of measured powder diffraction patterns of Fe3O4 with incident X-ray energies near the absorption edge of iron.

The combustion synthesis of the common ferroelectric material, BaTiO3, was developed using the stoichiometry: BaO2+0.2 Ti+0.8 TiO2→BaTiO3+0.3 O2. An adiabatic temperature, Tad, of the reaction was calculated from known thermodynamic data to be 1917 °C. Real time chemical changes in the formation of BaTiO3 during the reaction have been monitored using time-resolved X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation as the X-ray source. A time resolution of 250 ms was achieved. The combustion synthesis of BaTiO3 was followed by observing the intensities of reactant and product Bragg diffraction peaks in order to qualitatively identify the phases present. Because BaTiO3 forms initially as a cubic phase, X-ray diffraction of the product was monitored for a period of 20 min after the reaction to observe the phase transformation to the tetragonal form. This transformation is evident in these post-reaction scans as the cubic 110 and 220 peaks are split to the tetragonal 101/110 and 202/220 ones, respectively.

FARHAN is a PC interactive, graphically oriented search–match–identification–quantification computer program for X-ray powder diffraction, which uses a variable intensity-error window (IEW). Both the intensity scale factor and the IEW for each standard phase are estimated by a simple iterative procedure. A new tunable combined figure-of-merit (agreement function) is suggested for estimating the goodness-of-fit of matches. The concentrations of the identified phases may be determined by normalized or generalized RIR quantification methods, if the RIRs of the identified phases are known.

The crystal structure of the natural zeolite garronite from Goble, Oregon has been refined using high resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data. Garronite has the same tetrahedral aluminosilicate framework as gismondine [GIS], and earlier structural models indicated a strong tetragonal pseudosymmetry. Proposed models in the literature were based on the I4¯m2 and I41/a space groups, on account of symmetry lowering from the topological I41/amd space due to partial cation/water molecule order in the zeolitic cavities. Test structure analysis has been performed in all possible space subgroups including monoclinic space groups, and the refinement has been successfully carried out in space group I2/a (C2/c). The resulting monoclinic structure model is to be preferred over the tetragonal ones on the basis of: (1) lower agreement indices of the refinement; (2) a chemically sound framework geometry; and (3) a more satisfactory interpretation of the Ca atoms coordination in the extraframework cages.

XLENS is a traditional direct methods program working exclusively in reciprocal space. The distinctive feature of XLENS is the use of the modulus sum function as target function for the phase refinement. Due to its efficiency, robustness, and no need of weighting schemes, this function is specially well suited for treating powder diffraction data. The mathematical basis as well as the significance of the most important control parameters of the program will be described here. To illustrate how XLENS works, three different examples will be shown. Due to its simplicity, the modulus sum function can be easily combined with real-space filtering procedures to produce even more efficient crystal structure solving strategies.
