Since the advent of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) forty years ago, then massively spurred on by the rise of next generation sequencing (NGS) methods, our abilities to detect and characterise eggs and larvae of various parasites has grown tremendously within the last decade. This virtual collection of 9 papers in Parasitology, published since 2018, hopes to excite readers and future authors in the possibilities that these technologies might offer. Our highlighted papers provide a glimpse into what new research directions that the field of parasitology might take. Looking ahead, CUP hopes to commission a special issue of Parasitology in 2025 dedicated to support and promote this exciting research agenda.
