Alkali feldspars in plutonic igneous rocks vary both in their exsolution textures and in the structural state of their components. The primary factor leading to this diversity is the availability of hydrothermal fluids during their cooling history. In many plutons feldspar variation is related to degree of fractionation as indicated by rock chemistry. The variation reflects build-up of water with magmatic evolution and implies that fluids did not circulate freely in the intrusives in the temperature range of unmixing and ordering. Experimental work bearing on the role of fluids in subsolidus changes in feldspars is reviewed, and points of overlap between crystallographic studies of feldspars and stable isotope studies are discussed.

Whiteite, Ca(Fe,Mn)2+Mg2Al2(OH)2 (H2O)8[PO4]4, a 14·90(4) Å, b 6·98(2) Å, c 10·13(2) Å, β 113° 07(10)′, Z = 2, space group P2/a, α 1·580(5), β 1·585(5), γ 1·590(5), 2V 40–50°, specific gravity 2·58, is a new species from the Ilha de Taquaral, Minas Gerais, Brazil. It is the Al3+-analogue of jahnsite. The mineral occurs as up to 5 mm tan crystals flattened on {001}. Twinning by reflection on {001} leads to pseudoorthorhombic development. Rather pure material also occurs from Blow River, Yukon Territory, Canada.

For the general formula XM(1)M(2)2M(3)2(OH)2 (H2O)8[PO4]4, it is proposed that for M(3), Al3+ > Fe3+, the established members of the series are whiteite—(CaFe2+Mg) and whiteite—(Mn2+Fe2+Mg); and for Fe3+ > Al3+, jahnsite—(CaMn2+Mg), jahnsite—(CaMn2+Fe2+), and possibly jahnsite—(Mn2+Mn2+Mn2+).

Xanthoxenite of Laubmann and Steinmetz (1920) is probably stewartite (in part) on the basis of morphological, optical, physical, and paragenetic evidence. The xanthoxenite of Frondel (1949) is proposed as the species type. It is triclinic, P or P1, a 6·70(4) Å, b8·85(4) Å, c 6·54(3) Å, α 92·1(2)°, β 110·2(2)°, γ 93·2(2)°, Z = 1 for composition .

Salmonsite, c. from Pala, California, is shown to be an intimate mixture of hureaulite and jahnsite on the basis of calculated and observed powder patterns and on reinterpretation of the original chemical analysis published by Schaller (1912). It is a breakdown product resulting from oxidation of Fe2+ in the original hureaulite (‘palaite’) along with further aquation followed by fine-grained recrystallization. The reaction proposed is:

The morphology of calcium metasilicate produced during the crystallization of glasses and melts of approximately metasilicate composition has been investigated. Both isothermal heat treatments and a dynamic crystal-pulling technique were employed. The crystallization took place by a dendritic or spherulitic mechanism, according to which of the crystal polymorphs is stable under the prevailing conditions. The morphology of the crystals is controlled by the ease with which the anionic groups present in the amorphous phase can be incorporated into the growing crystals. This is reflected in the values of the activation energies of crystal growth found for α-CaSiO3 (160 kJ mol−1) and for β-CaSiO3 (319 to 383 kJ mol−1). The Keith and Padden theory of spherulitic crystallization was verified for the growth of β-CaSiO3 over a range of supercoolings. Time-temperature-transformation diagrams have been constructed from the experimental data.

Bahianite, Sb3Al5O14(OH)2-Sb3Al5(Al, Be, Si)<2O16, monoclinic, a 9·406(6), b 11·541(8), c 4·410(3) Å, β 90·94(3)°, Z = 2, space group C2/m, is a new species from the Paramirim region, south central Bahia state, Brazil. It occurs as water-worn pebbles (‘favas’) with quartz, andalusite, kyanite, diaspore, eskolaite, cassiterite, etc. Colour tan to cream, crystals in vugs colourless, tan or pale violet. Specific gravity ranges from 4·89 to 5·46 (5·26 g cm−3 for Sb3Al5O14(OH)2); hardness 9, cleavage {100} perfect, lustre adamantine, biaxial (−), 2V large, α = 1·81, β = 1·87, γ = 1·92, dispersion r > v.

The crystal structure represents a new type and is based on hexagonal close-packed oxygens. It is related to the structure of simpsonite Ta3Al14O13(OH).

The Helmholtz dispersion equations have been rewritten in a form that enables the optical constants of both transparent and opaque media to be calculated from their spectra. Both Helmholtz equations are used to describe the optical properties of opaque media, and to obtain values of reflectance, refractive index, and absorption coefficient. The Sellmeier dispersion equation is a special case of the dispersive Helmholtz equation applicable to weakly absorbing media (including the great majority of minerals studied in thin section): it is used to derive the wavelength-, composition-, direction-, and volume-dependence of the principal indices in mixed crystals of monoclinic or higher symmetry. The treatment can be extended to triclinic crystals.

The birefringence of transparent phases is the expression in the visible region of the pleochroism of absorption bands in the ultra-violet. The bireflectance of opaque phases depends also upon the pleochroism of bands in the visible and near infra-red, resulting in extreme sensitivity of the optics of opaque materials to changes in wavelength, composition, and structure. The optical anisotropy of both transparent and opaque phases may be calculated if the dependence of the spectra on structure can be established by measurement or by calculation from structure data. The quantitative application of Bragg's method is restricted to phases of very simple chemistry and structure (e.g. calcite and rutile), but it may be applied qualitatively to rationalize the optic orientations of phases containing only closed-shell ions of neon or argon configuration, including many pyroxenes, amphiboles, micas, and chain aluminosilicates. When open-shell (transition metal) ions enter the structure, the general rule is that the anisotropy becomes more closely related to the distortion of the coordination polyhedron about the metal ion, and for ions of formal charge ≥ 3, this source of anisotropy is usually dominant.

The residual liquids of many tholeiitic basalts and andesites, on cooling, split into iron-rich and silica-rich fractions, which may quench to brown glassy globules and clear glass respectively. More commonly, however, cooling is sufficiently slow for the iron-rich liquid to crystallize to globular single crystals of pyroxene. Depending on the cooling rate, these crystallized globules range in shape from spheres to elongated globules bounded by crystal faces. The fine grain size of the mesostasis of most tholeiites is partly due to these small crystallized globules. The silica-rich fraction, on the other hand, is more commonly quenched to a glass, and when preserved as globules in the crystallized iron-rich fraction, it may be bounded by negative crystal faces of the surrounding pyroxene. Globules of the iron-rich liquid commonly nucleate on the surface of the plagioclase crystals where they can become trapped, later crystallizing to spherical pyroxene grains that mostly contain a minor opaque phase. In contrast, iron-rich globules that form next to pyroxene grains commonly become attached to these crystals, giving them lobate boundaries. The immiscible silica-rich liquid becomes trapped between these lobes and, with sufficiently slow cooling, results in finger-like quartzo-feldspathic inclusions extending in from the margins of the pyroxene grains. These textures can provide evidence of immiscibility in a wide range of volcanic and hypabyssal rocks, even when no glass is present.

Tlapallite is a new mineral found in 1972 at the Bambollita (La Oriental) mine near Moctezuma, Sonora. Also recently found in old specimens from Tombstone, Arizona. Data for type (Mexican) material: Colour viridian green RHS-128A with pale streak, H = 3, Dcalc = 5·05 g/cm3. Crystals monoclinic, class unknown. Indexing based on Ito method gave a cell: a = 11·97 Å, b = 9·11, c = 15·66, β = 90 ° 36′. Strongest lines: 11·972 Å (10), 2·985 (10), 3·540 (6), 5·946 (5), 2·887 (5), 4·731 (4), 3·372 (4), 3·282 (4). Similar data obtain for Tombstone. Chemical analysis for type material yielded the formula H6Ca2Cu3(SO4)(TeO3)4,TeO6 with Te4+:Te6+ = 4:1. However, analysis of the Tombstone material indicates a more general formula H6(Ca, Pb)2(Cu, Zn)3(SO4) (TeO3)4,TeO6. The better data from this material indicate Z = 4, Dcalc = 5·465 vs Dmeas = 5·38. Characterized by extreme birefringence, α = 1·815, β = γ = 1·960; for Tombstone α = 1·955, β = γ = 2·115.

Named from the Nahua word tlapalli, meaning paint, in allusion to its mode of occurrence at the type locality.

Several discordant, garnet-bearing bodies are described from the St. Just part of the Land's End granite aureole, Cornwall. It is suggested that these formed by a combination of metasomatic replacement and dilation with concomitant precipitation. Other Ca-Fe aluminosilicates (containing large amounts of Zn, Sn, B, and Be) are also present in the bodies. The chemical, petrographic, and field evidence suggests that the introduced material was transported by hydrothermal fluids. These fluids could well be related to the intrusion of the granite and the earliest phases of ore mineralization. Chemical analyses of garnets, calcic amphiboles and one apatite, epidote, diopside, and axinite are given.

Rhythmic layering in the Skaergaard intrusion shows variation in crystal size and in modal proportions of primocrysts with structural height. These changes are ascribed to variations in nucleation rates of primocrysts. The nucleation theory requires that crystallization occurs under supercooled conditions, and that the crystallization of one primocryst phase may change the composition of the magma in such a manner that the nucleation rates of other primocrysts are influenced. Both these constraints appear to have been fulfilled for the Skaergaard intrusion.

Emeleusite (Li2Na4Fe2IIISi12O30) is an orthorhombic (pseudohexagonal) mineral occurring as euhedra within a facies of a peralkaline trachyte dyke. The composition is: SiO2 70·75; TiO2 0·55; ZrO2 0·10; Al2O3 1·34; Fe2O3 12·13; MgO 0·10; MnO 0·03; Na2O 11·98; Li2O 2·78:99·76. The density is 2·775 g/cm3 (calculated) and 2·76(7) g/cm3 (determined); hardness 5–6. It is colourless, transparent, and has a glassy lustre. Emeleusite is biaxial negative with 2Va, varying from near-zero to c. 30° r » v. The refractive indices are α 1·596; β 1·597; y 1·597; with α ∥ b; β ∥ a; y ∥ c. Emeleusite can occur as interpenetration triplets with {110} as twin planes. The space group is Acam or Aba2 with a = 10·073±0·002 Å; b = 17·350±0·005 Å and c = 14·010±0·005 Å. Z = 4. Prominent powder diffraction lines are 7·001(5) 002, 4·352(10) 220, 040, 3·501(7) 004, 3·209(8) 311, and 3·090(7) 124. While the structure is as yet unknown it is suggested that it is an orthorhombic associate of the milarite group.

The distribution and geochemistry of loveringite, an accessory Ti, Fe±Cr oxide containing U and rare-earth elements (Ln) from the Jimberlana Intrusion, have been studied. Loveringite is most abundant in bronzite cumulates; it is found in trace amounts in early plagioclase-augite-hypersthene cumulates, but is not found in the olivine cumulates or in the late-stage differentiates. Loveringites from the bronzite cumulates have a high Cr content compared with those from the plagioclase-augite-hypersthene cumulates, suggesting that the mineral is stabilized by the presence of Cr in the intercumulus liquid. The Ln pattern shows a strong depletion trend from La to Eu, a sharp reversal between Eu and Tb and a second depletion pattern from Tb to Lu. This pattern suggests that the Ln are substituting into two sites, one much larger than the other.

Bazirite, BaZrSi3O9, is one of several late-stage interstitial minerals present in the aegirine-riebeckite granite of Rockall Island. Crystals are hexagonal, probably ¯6m2, colourless, chiefly as anhedral grains. Only forms noted {10¯10} and probably {10¯14}, cleavage {0001} and probably {10¯14}. ‘Low’ and ‘high’ titanium varieties with respective mean compositions: SiO2 39·71%, ZrO2 26·38%, BaO 33·69%, TiO2 0·17%, SnO2 0·06% and SiO2 39·59%, ZrO2 26·12%, BaO 34·12%, TiO2 0·51%, SnO2 0·11%. Low and high refractive index types exist; uniaxial positive with ω = 1·6751±0·0003. ɛ = 1·6850±0·0003 and ω = 1·6813±0·0003, ɛ = 1·691 (deduced); probably due to differences in titanium content. Fluorescence (2537 Å), moderately strong, pale whitish blue. Space group almost certainly P¯6c2. Cell dimensions: low R.I. variety, a = 6·7690±0·0005 Å, c = 10·020±0·001 Å; high R.I. variety, a = 6·7662± 0·0005 Å, c = 10·158±0·0010 Å. Strongest lines are 3·80 Å (100), 2·800 (100), 5·85 (35), 3·38 (35), Z = 2. Dcalc = 3·82. Related minerals, benitoite and pabstite.

Partial replacement of original igneous augite crystals by omphacite during blueschist metamorphism of a dolerite from the Mihalliççik area of north-west Turkey has been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The replacement occurred topotactically, apparently by ion exchange with a fluid phase, which left the basic pyroxene structure unchanged. Cation ordering in the omphacite caused a symmetry change from C-face centred to primitive with the formation of fine-scale antiphase domains. Selected-area diffraction provides evidence for P2 and P2/c space groups for the ordered omphacite though the best ordered areas show a tendency towards P2/n (reflections violating the n-glide are very weak) and also contain fine, wavy, disordered precipitates approximately parallel to (too).

It is suggested that the replacement temperature was below the cation-ordering temperature and that the omphacite grew in a metastable, disordered state. Subsequent ordering occurred under irreversible conditions via a series of intermediate structures. The ordering sequence may illustrate the relationship between different ordering schemes in other blueschist pyroxenes.

Electron-microprobe analyses of cumulus olivine, chromite, pyroxene, and plagioclase from layered peridotites and allivalites of the Eastern and Western Layered Series of Rhum demonstrate the presence of cryptic variation. Olivine varies from Fo88-78 within individual units, and there are corresponding changes in the Mg/(Mg+Fe2+) ratios in the pyroxenes and chromites. Plagioclase changes are not so dramatic, but the An-content broadly follows the Mg/(Mg+Fe2+) ratio in the other minerals. The most Fe-(and Na-) rich phases do not occur at the top of lithological units, but some way below. The composition trend above them is reversed. The data are interpreted as the result of periodic infilling of a magma chamber, the new magma mixing with the remains of the previous pulse. Each pulse was followed by a period when fractional crystallization produced the layered rocks. New data on Ni in the olivines suggests that the ratio of the volume of initial magma to volume of layered rocks was about four to one, the initial magma being allied to the high-calcium low-alkali tholeiitic basalts of Skye.

The deformation of biotite single crystals submitted to experimental shock-pressures of about 200 and 400 kb with direction of the shock wave parallel to [001] was investigated by X-ray precession and Weissenberg techniques. The X-ray analysis reveals a ‘fracturing’ of the biotite crystals upon pressure release into relatively large lattice blocks (> 1000 Å), which increases with the degree of shock compression. Deformation is inferred to take place by gliding and/or microfracturing processes parallel to the (010) and (110) lattice planes. Chains of tetrahedra running parallel to [100] and [110] probably exert a controlling influence on shock deformation mechanisms.

An occurrence of aegirine in Middle Devonian lacustrine beds in Caithness is described. The mineral occurs as euhedral to subhedral prismatic crystals within a finely laminated siltstone. Microprobe analyses reveal a remarkably ‘pure’ composition consisting almost entirely of Na, Fe3+, Si, and O. X-ray diffractometry yielded the unit cell data: a 9·657 Å, b 8·800 Å, c 5·296 Å, and β 107·37°. Comparison with other natural aegirine compositions shows marked differences from those of igneous or metamorphic origin but a close similarity to a unique occurrence of authigenic aegirine in the lacustrine Green River Formation of Wyoming, U.S.A. Consideration of the nature of the Caithness occurrence, and comparison of the Devonian Orcadian basin with the Eocene Green River basin indicate similar geological environments. It is suggested that the mineral formed in hypersaline conditions in which sodium may have been derived from contemporaneous alkaline volcanism within the Orcadian basin.

Black tourmaline from Corrego do Urucum, Brazil, is an elbaite coloured by iron and manganese with blue, green, and pink regions. Polarized spectra show the absorption bands expected in elbaite (Fe-caused blue and green, and pink, which is probably caused by Mn). The colour distribution in the transverse sections does not conform to the symmetry of tourmaline and changes along the length of the crystals. Two distinct growth stages are indicated, separated by a partial dissolution and followed by another dissolution.

The high-temperature transformation of andalusite (Al2SiO5) into 3/2-mullite (3A2O32SiO2) plus vitreous silica (SiO2) has been studied within the temperature interval from 1300 to 1600 °C by means of X-ray powder and single-crystal techniques and by infrared spectroscopy. Results are interpreted in terms of a topotactic transformation in which (011) and (01) planes of andalusite transform into (20) and (201) planes of 3/2-mullite; in this way the a- and b-axes of the two phases are interchanged. From the structural and orientational relationship between the andalusite and 3/2-mullite latrices it is concluded that the aluminium-oxygen octahedral chains, running in both structures parallel to the crystallographic c-axis, are preserved during phase transformation.
