Iranian caricatures are divided into two categories, the karikatur-i matbu‘ati and karikatur-i bedun-i sharh also named karikaturha-yi namayeshgahi. The first category contains caricatures and cartoons in Iranian press commenting on current political or social issues, which usually lose their meaning after a certain time. The second category encompasses those caricatures and cartoons which are made for illustrating and interpreting issues on general subjects such as water, environment, war etc. for exhibitions or prize competitions. They usually do not refer to current single events.
