Why choose this journal?

The Historical Journal is one of the world’s leading generalist history journals. We publish articles on all aspects of history from the fifteenth century onwards by historians at all career stages. The editors of the HJ welcome submissions which make an innovative historiographical contribution, and which speak to a broad audience of historians. Alongside original research articles, the HJ publishes field-shaping historiographical reviews and review articles, themed special issues, and ‘retrospects’, digital collections of articles from our archive which address longstanding and emerging debates. The journal is highly selective, and all submissions are subject to a rigorous peer review process, which can feature input from our co-editors, external reviewers, and our distinguished editorial board.

All articles in this journal are now published Gold open access; an important way to make research findings freely available for anyone to access and view. Open access serves authors and the wider community by publishing high-quality, peer-reviewed OA content. For more information about publishing Gold OA in this journal, see our open access options.
