Issues Affecting Gerontology Education and Manpower Needs in Population Aging

Abstract

This paper discusses seven major issues that will affect the development of gerontology education in response to manpower needs in aging in Canada. These issues concern the definitions of aging for educational and manpower policy, manpower forecasting, knowledge base in gerontology, gerontology as an academic field or as a professional field, development of education programs, employment opportunities, and factors in supply and demand. The author stresses the importance of creating baseline data about manpower needs and occupational settings and about the knowledge base of gerontology in Canada.

Résumé

Le présent article a pour objet sept questions importantes affectant le développement de la formation des gérontologues en vue de satisfaire les besoins de la population vieillissante du Canada. Ces questions intéressent la définition du vieillissement dans la mesure où celui-ci affecte l'élaboration d'une politique de la formation et de la main d'oeuvre, les prévisions concernant la main d'oeuvre, le fond de connaissance acquises en gérontologie, la gérontologie considérée comme domaine d'étude universitaire ou comme profession, l'élaboration des programmes de formation, l'emploi, et les facteurs affectant l'offre et la demande. L'auteur insiste sur la nécessité d'une base de données sur la main d'oeuvre, les lieux de travail, ainsi que sur le fond de connaissances acquises en gérontologie au Canada.
