Evaluation of The Canadian Red Cross Society's Fun and Fitness Program for Seniors

Abstract

An ongoing, structured, low-intensity exercise program designed to foster physical, social and cognitive functioning was evaluated in 128 seniors ranging in age from 55 to 101 years. The sample included individuals residing in the general community, seniors' apartment complexes and institutional care facilities. Participation in other exercises was found to increase since joining the program. The program appeared to be providing an opportunity for social interaction among participants, and the exercises appeared to be mentally stimulating. Implications for program modifications, including building in self-monitoring procedures, are discussed.

Résumé

Un programme structuré et continu d'exercices de faible intensité destiné à stimuler les fonctions physiques, sociales et cognitives a été évalué auprès de 128 personnes âgées de 55 à 101 ans parmi lesquelles se trouvaient des sujets habitant chez eux, dans des résidences pour personnes âgées, et dans des foyers. Les résultats indiquent un accroîssement de la participation subséquente à l'instauration du programme. Celui-ci semble fournir aux participants l'occasion de contacts sociaux, et les exercices semblent stimuler l'activité mentale. Le rapport comporte des considérations sur la modification des programmes, y compris l'introduction de procédures d'autocontrôle incorporées.
