This wasp has been reported capturing as prey the western harvester or mound-building prairie ant, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis (Cresson), and carrying it on its sting or on the posterior end of the abdomen to its nest. During the month of September, 1932, the writer was again privileged to wasp and to make some further observations.

During field work at Bobcaygeon, Ont., in the summers of 1931 and 1932 I paid particular attention to the collecting and breeding of Haploptilia larvae and was successful in securing considerably over a dozen species. As very little has been published on this interesting group apart from Heinrich's excellent treatment in Forbes' Lepidoptera of New York State (1924, Mem. 68, Cornell Univ. Agr. Exp. Sta. pp. 202-217) it has occurred to me that the publication of my field notes, combined with a photographic figure of the characteristic larval case pertaining to each species, might be of value to students.

For several years I have been interested in the prey of the Robber Fly, Mallophora orcina (Weid). I have taken two hundred and eighteen specimens of this robber fly with its prey. The prey belonged to twenty-three species of insects.

It will be noticed that not a single specimen was taken with the large yellow jacket (Vespa carolina), although this species is as common here as is the smaller yellow jacket (Vespa germanica). Ten specimens were taken with Liacos nobilitata, while not a single specimen was taken with Liacos bicincta, although it is as common here as is nobilitata.

Crotch, in his Check List of the Coleoptera, 1873, substitutes the name Pseudocistela Cr. for Cistela Fab. of the LeConte and Horn Classification. There seems to have been a doubt about Mulsant's genus Gonodera according to Leng, (Jour N. Y. Ent. Soc., XXVI, 209, 1918) who says “the genus Gonodera Muls. Col. Cr. Pectin, 1856, may cover our species and if so would antedate Crotch's name.” As we have not been able to see a specimen of the genus Gonodera, we are using the above name. Casey, (Annals N. Y. Acad. Sci., VI, 73, 1891), in his key, groups Pseudocistela with the genus Androchirus as having anterior tarsi “compressed and distorted” in the males. The genus Pseudocistela, however, does not (except brevis which has a slight distortion in the male) have the anterior tarsi compressed and distorted, but normal. Col. Casey's use of the word “distorted” instead of “deformed,” used by LeConte and Horn seems advisable.

While, as Mr. Fall points out, the species of this group are rather closely allied, there seems to be a number of forms not yet described. Mr. W. J. Brown has recently described two species from British Columbia and the three treated in this paper seem clearly distinct.

The distinctions among the species are rather difficult to define, though, with the exception of certain forns of vilis and planiusculus, the differences may be seen clearly when secimens are at hand.

On November 3rd, 1928, I collected at Stone Mountain, Georgia, a Carabid beetle—Dicaelus elongatus (Bon.)—which gave off a very strong discharge of gas which turned to a dense smoke. This appeared to come from the sides of the thorax, instead of from the posterior end of the abdomen as in the genus Brachynus.

While studying some material sent to me from the southern part of Caliicrnia, there came to my notice this very small species of bark beetle, which interested me greatly. While it is not of much economic importance, as are other members of the subfamily Hylesininae, it is of interest because of its host relationship to Chaetophloeus hystrix (Lec.). Both occur on Rhus integrifolia.

This is a new species and a description of the same follows.

In connection with the descriptions of Fabriciella emarginata Toth. and F. latifrons Toth. (Can. Ent. LVI, 260, 1924) no mention is made of the specimens on which these names are based except to define the distribution of the species in a list at the end of Dr. Tothill's paper.

Smoky black, apical three-fourths of elytra blood red: clothed with moderately dense prostrate pubescence.

Head black, closely, finely punctate, moderately densely pubescent, a wide, deep transverse impression between the eyes: beak pubescent, closely, finely punctate, moderately long, subparallel, half as wide as long at apex; maxillary palpi closely and finely punctate, moderately pubescent, apical joint not twice as long as wide, apex rounded, inner side subangulate; antennae finely, closely punctate, densely pubescent, with a few short, erect, pale hairs scattered irregularly, third joint wider and very slightly longer than fourth.
