In the Canadian Entolnologist for November, 1925, I reviewed tne Canadian species of Lydella Desv. As certain changes in the terminology therein proposed are necessary it seems advisable to review the related forms and present a key to the genera concerned. The species under discussion, with some exceptions, trace to Masicera Macq. in keys dealing with the Nearctic fauna and the key to the genera may be used to supplement those in Williston's Manual, 1908, and Coquillett's “Revision.”

The genus Jassus is a very large genus of leafhoppers known to occur over a very large portion of the earth. Many species have been described from India, Africa, Central and South America, the Phillipines and several other countries. A very few species, however, seem to occur in America north of Mexico. Since only one of these species is well known, two but slightly known, and two apparently new to science, the writer feels that a short paper introducing us to the small part of the genus known to occur in the United States would not be out of place. A paper on the other American species is being prepared and should be ready for publication before long.

In the present report, I have begun the consideration of the very extensive collections of crane-flies from Alberta that have been received from the Canadian National Collection, through Mr. Curran ; tlie very extensive series collected by Mr. Owen Bryant; a series from Banff, collected by Mr. Garrett; and the collections of the University of Alberta, sent through the kindness of Professor Strickland. I wish to express my sincere thanks to all of the above mentioned gentlemen for this kind co-operation in making known the Tipulid fauna of Alberta, a list that will certainly exceed in numbers that of any other of the Canadian Provinces with the single exception of British Columbia.

A new species of this interesting and little-known genus was recently found at Goldstream, B. C. It was a dead specimen and was found among detritus washed up on the edge of the reservoir. It is close to D. ovata O. & D. but differs from it in many important characters. The specimen is brachypterous.

It is quite evident that this species has been wrongly identified in most collections owing to the fact that Williston erroneously placed his C. obscuripennis as a synonynl of brachyrhynchus. In Williston's table of species (Trans. Con. Acad. Sci., vi, 390) obscuripennis goes into couplet 2 under the caption: “Third joint of the antennae distinctly shorter than the second.”

While collecting in the vicinity of Niagara Falls, Ont., last summer, a new species of Empis was secured and a description is offered below. The species was quite common there during the latter part of June and specimens were found frequenting shady nooks in the rich moist woods of Niagara Glen.

The present paper is an attempt to review and bring up to date our knowledge of the Canadian species of net-winged Midges or Blephariceridae. Since the publication in 1903 of Kellogg's “Net-Winged Midges of North America,” several new species have been added to our list and additional records have come to hand thus increasing our knowledge of the distribution of several species; also certain generic changes seem advisable and it is hoped that the present paper will serve to facilitate the identification of our Canadian species.

Descriptions of several new species of two-winged flies from North America are presented herewith and keys to several genera or well-defined groups are given. I am indebted to Dr. J. M. Aldrich of the United States National Museum for comparing considerable Tachinid material with the types in collectiocs under his care and also for additional representatives of some of the new species.

Among some Arizona and Texas material received through Mr. S. Cassino I have found a species of Parapheromia which appears to be new and which I describe as follows :—

Parapheromia cassinoi n. sp.

Male. Antennae claviform; head and thorax an admixture of black and light gray scaling; primaries light brown, heavily obscured with black scaling the ground-color only showing plainly along the outer margin and in the median area in the region of the discal spot; lines black, the basal one double and strongly excurved, the median one arising from a small black costal patch and subparallel to basal line, outer one irregularly outcurved below costa, then inwardly oblique and rather rigid to a point helow the inception of vein two, where it bends and runs perpendicular to inner margin; this line distinctly geminate in its lower region and followed above inner margin by an irregular white patch; s. t. line white, irregularly dentate and preceded by a blackish shade; a slight black dash below apex and faint black terminal line; fringes pale smoky.

One of the more interesting details of a recent investigation of the mosquitoes of the Rocky Mountains Park, Alberta, was the finding of Aedes nearcticus Dyar—a mosquito hitherto considered to be restricted to the Arctic regions of Europe and North America. A few specimens were first taken at Lake Louise in 1921, when Mr. Arthur Gibson, the Dominion Entomologist, and the writer made a brief survey of mosquito conditions. In 1922 further specimens came to hand through the kindness of Mr. N. B. Sanson who sent the writer living larvae collected at Simpson's Summit at about 7000 feet. Adults were successfully reared from these. During 1924 and 1925 a number of trips were made by the writer and his assistant, Mr. A. G. Mail, to secure data on this interesting species, and several hundred specimens of larvae, and both sexes of adults were taken.

I am indebted to the Rev. Robert Connell for some very interesting Coleopterous remains in black lignite from the south end of Cordova Bay, Victoria. The deposit is overlain by about 180 feet of clay, sand, and gravel, the Cordova sands and gravels and Maywood clays constituting the Puyallup interglacial deposits, with Vashon drift above. Of the Puyallup deposits the Maywood clays are the older, and in them is the lignite bed with marine shells in the overlying clay and finely stratified whitish clay underlying it. The lignite contains pieces of wood, seeds, and other plant remains.

In a pamphlet entitled “Burrowing Mayflies of Our Larger Lakes and Streams,” published in 1920 in the Bulletin United States Bureau of Fisheries, Vol. XXXVI, pp. 269-292, Professor Needham, discussing the species of the genus Hexagenia, makes the statement (op. cit. p. 279) that he is “unable to recognize more than two good and distinct species in the Eastern United States—a lowland species from lakes and rivers, Hexagenia bilineata Say. and an upland bog-stream species, H. recurvata Morg.” He amplifies this statement in previous paragraphs (p. 278) by applying the name bilineata Say. “to all the variants of the species that occupies the beds of our larger lakes and streams. The color differences appear to be only differences of degree. Even the differences of male genitalia—usually our ultimate criteria of species—are intergradient.”

The preceding part under this general title was published in 1921 (Can. Ent. 53 : 132-137). The species discussed at this time are all included in the very extensive series of these flies belonging to the Canadian National Collection and kindly sent to me for determination by Mr. Curran. I am greatly indebted to Mr. Curran, and to the various collectors of the material, for the opportunity of studying this important series of specimens.

Elongate oval, very nearly twice as long as wide, outline nearly continuous. Body above and legs dull yellow, beneath black. Head with a diffuse oblique fuscous spot each side ; thorax with a small post-median discal spot and the front and rear margins narrowly infuscate at middle; elytra each with four indicated fuscous vittae which are usually largely confluent; body above and beneath shining in both sexes, the ventral segments inclining to be feebly alutaceous in the female. Front tarsi of male rather strongly dilated, basal two joints equal and evidently wider than the third, claws strongly curved, equal, stouter than in the female, the anterior one with a stout basal tooth.

Male. Intermediate in maculation between glaciana Moesch. and bipartitana Clem. Basal area dark black-brown, outwardly angulate in central portion of wing; antemedian whitish band broad on the costa, more or less perpendicular, with a few dark strigae; median dark band much as in bipartitana; whitish terminal area also much as in this species with three dark costal streaks and a small dark apical spot; slight dark reticulations below apex and a narrow dark patch at middle of outer margin (only evident on right side). Secondaries smoky. Expanse 18 mm.

Head and palpi dark brown sprinkled with gray. Primaries deep brown, somewhat paler in apical region where there is scattered ochreous scaling; two rather obscure whitish vertical streaks about the middle of the inner margin which in the middle of the wing connect with still more obscure oblique streaks from middle of costa which show a slight purplish metallic color; ocelloid region bordered by two broad metallic bars, more or less united above tornus; the contained area is slightly sprinkled with pale ochreous but contains no definite dark streaks ; apical area of costa with four short geminate white streaks, the first pair connecting with the inner ocelloid bar by a metallic streak, the middle pairs more or less joined basally by metallic scaling, and the outer pair giving rise to a metallic line which curves to outer margin and ends in a white dot; similar white dots occur at the outer ends of the ocelloid bars; fringes with a dark basal line, followed by a pale area and again darker outwardly, sprinkled with white scaling opposite the above mentioned white dots. Secondaries deep smoky; fringes pale with dark basal line. Beneath dull smoky with white costal streaks of primaries repeated. Expanse 10-11 mm.

In connection with a revision of Agrotid genera (in sens. strict.) which I have been working on for some time and which has involved a study of the male genitalia of all our North American species, I have come across a number of discrepancies in the placing of certain genera and species which it is the purpose of this short paper to correct.
