Pensioners at the Benedictine College at Dieulouard (1619–1756)

Extract

The College attached to the English Benedictine monastery at Dieulouard in Lorraine never consisted of more than a tiny number of students, mostly postulants. The pensioners’ “Apartments” in 1756 contained only eight rooms and a library.

There is a slightly later note in another hand that Belasyse became Viscount Fauconberg (4th discount of Newburgh Priory, apostatised about 1733, returned to the Church on his death bed.) and Gascoigne a baronet. Sir Edward Gascoigne of Partington Yorks, (both Newburgh and Partington were Bened, missions), went on a tour of Italy in 1725 and married in 1726. In the 1730's he went with his family to live in a house alongside the English Benedictine convent at Cambrai and died there in 1750. His commonplace books (which reveal a considerable taste for, theology and natural science) and letters are in Gascoigne MS 13 G. Parcels 4 ff. (at Leeds Central Library). The lists of books read by him are printed in Ampleforth Journal, LX1 (i) pp. 36 ff.

Apr. 8th 1755 Jn Bennet and Jn Turner went to Dieulouard paid ten pounds a piece for their journey from London and are to pay fifty pounds for their education at the rate of ten poundsi per year, for five years if they so long continue. Their parents are to pay their journey back again if they do not settle.

Memorandum April the 7th 1755 I, Robert Bennet of Westby in the County of Lancaster yeoman promise to pay for the education of my son Jn Bennet at the English house of Dieulouard fifty pounds in five years at the rate of ten pounds a year if the said son lives there so long and if he returns without settling I engage to pay the charges of his journey home again. Written my hand, Robert Bennet.”
