Summary

This island greatly resembles St. Vincent. It is of nearly the same size, not less mountainous, and hardly less beautiful and picturesque. In its political history it is also similar. Well watered, almost every valley having a stream; well wooded; having a coast abounding in harbours and landing places, it was one of the last resorts as it had long been a favorite abode of the Caribs. It was, and at a late period, first colonized by the French. Their earliest settlement was made in 1650. From them, as in the instance of St. Vincent, it came into our possession by right of conquest, viz. in 1762. Nor does its after history much differ from that of its beauteous sister island; like it under similar circumstances, it had its prosperous period; and like it, its disastrous period, which still continues, and even aggravated, owing to causes, some of which are obvious, others less so and more obscure.

Grenada in length is estimated to be about 25 miles, in its greatest breadth about 12; and is supposed to include within its area about 85,000 acres, or 133 square miles.
