Summary
The Certification Officer's report for 1988 lists (pp. 26–39) 354 trade unions. Of these:
(a) Nineteen are areas of NUM which no longer exist or branches of NUM which have listed in order to present a distinct financial return but whose financial and membership data are contained within extant areas or the returns of the national union.
(b) Three, including APEX and AIT, have disappeared through merger.
(c) Eight are associations consisting of other unions which submit a separate return.
(d) Three are staff associations which no longer exist.
(e) Two are organizations of self-employed or owner operators.
If one deducts these from the given total, the resultant population figure is 319.
