Book description

This book explores the complex relationship between international trade and poverty reduction through a combination of research papers and contemporary case studies. Written mainly by developing-country authors in consultation with local businesses and communities, the case studies contribute to our understanding of the ways in which low-income communities are dealing with trade as a practical challenge, especially in the Asia-Pacific region where approximately two-thirds of the world's poor live. While making it clear that there is no 'one size fits all' formula, the research and stories highlight a number of necessary preconditions, such as political commitment and cooperation at all levels, if trade is to successfully reduce poverty. Openness to trade, serious commitment to domestic reform, trade-related capacity building, a robust and responsible private sector and access to the markets of developed countries are all identified as powerful tools for building trade-related sustainable development.

Reviews

‘By providing case studies from large and small industries in large and small countries at very different stages of development, this volume contributes significantly to the stock of empirical evidence in support of a more open, transparent and cooperative trade agenda able to deliver sustainable poverty reduction.’

Kym Anderson - former Chief Economist with the World Bank and international trade economist at the University of Adelaide

‘By giving voice to the indigenous communities of Nepal, the youth of East Timor and women potters of Lombok, this book provides a unique insight into the realities of how global integration and trade liberalisation affect low income communities in the Asia Pacific.’

Ricardo Melendez-Ortiz - Chief Executive Office, ICSTD

‘The complex relation between trade and poverty reduction is under the microscope here, with detailed research papers brought to life in an array of community based case-studies. What is revealed confirms the urgent need for trade reform – at the domestic, regional and multilateral level.’

Mike Moore - former Director General at the WTO and Prime Minister of New Zealand

‘This book is a refreshing move away from tedious ideological debates of free and fair trade toward telling us how it really is at ground level - with frankness and clarity.’
