RÉSUMÉ. La mer eut un rôle moteur dans l'histoire de l'Afrique lors de la période moderne. Du côté oriental, la maritimisation du littoral sous l'emprise swahilie, dés le début des Xe et XIe siècles, révèle la place prépondérante prise par la mer dans la définition d'une identité locale, dans le processus de différentiation sociale et dans la perception qu'ont du monde leurs habitants. A l'ouest, avec l'arrivée des Européens, le littoral atlantique de l'Afrique est à son tour l'objet d'un profond bouleversement géopolitique qui le fit passer de périphérie quelque peu marginale à celle de nouvelle frontière.

ABSTRACT. The sea played a leading role in the history of Africa during the modern period. On the eastern side, the coastline was made more maritime-orientated under Swahili power as early as the 10th and 11th centuries, which show the pre-eminent role of the sea in defining a local identity, in processing social differentiation, and in determining the inhabitants' perception of the world. On the western side, following the arrival of Europeans, the African Atlantic coastline is in its turn the object of a deep, geopolitical upheaval which made it turn from a somewhat marginal peripheral status to that of a new frontier.
