Grant by Alice de Harwe to William and Agnes Rede [n.d. (1280–81)]

May those present and future know that I, Alice de Harwe [Harrow], daughter of the late Simon de Lychefeld, have given, granted and by this my present deed have confirmed to William de Red the younger, citizen and skinner of London, and to his wife Agnes, and to the heirs and assigns of the same William, all that land with houses built above and its appurtenances which I had in Mugwell Street in the parish of St Olave in London, between the tenement of the canons of the new hospital1 towards the south and the tenement of Sir Robert Fitz Nigel towards the north, and extending from the king’s street on the east side as far as the city wall on the west side, i.e. all that I had there or could or should have had as in lands, buildings, wood, stones, lengthwise, breadthwise, and in all things without any diminution. Which aforesaid land with its houses built above and its appurtenances I, the aforesaid Alice, had from the release and grant of the late John, perpetual vicar of Hergwes [Harrow] church, my uncle: to have and to hold all the aforesaid land with its houses built above and its appurtenances, as is said above, by the aforesaid William and Agnes and the heirs and assigns of the same William, from myself and my heirs and assigns, freely, quit, well and in peace, in fee and inheritance, in perpetuity. Paying from it annually to me, my heirs or assigns, one clove of gillyflower at the Nativity of our Lord, and to the chief lords of that fee the services due and accustomed from it. And I the aforesaid Alice, my heirs and assigns, shall warrant, defend and acquit the whole of that aforesaid land with its houses built above and its appurtenances, as is said above, to the aforesaid William and Agnes and the heirs and assigns of the same William, against all men and women, Christians and Jews, for the aforesaid service in perpetuity.
