Summary
On 21 November, 2002, the Global Economic Council bestowed upon me the Rashtriya Rattan Award for Makaibari. ‘Rashtriya Rattan’ means jewel of the nation, and the award is given for outstanding individual achievement and distinguished services to the nation. It symbolises unity (ekta) achieved by creative (nirman) private enterprise (udyog) that glorifies (gaurav).
In July 2003, Makaibari's Silver Tips Imperial fetched a world record price at the Kolkata auctions conducted by J. Thomas and company at Rs. 18,000/- per kg.
Xavier de Lauzanne, a renowned documentary filmmaker from France, has made an award winning documentary The Lord of Darjeeling. This hour-long documentary (included with this book) captures the true spirit of Makaibari and is moving audiences at various film festivals globally.
Discovery channel and Travel and Living, featured Makaibari as the world's best tea in May/June /July 2007 in ‘A Matter of Taste – Two Leaves and a Bud’.
Since early 2006, the BBC had been interviewing sixty Indians selectively. The interviews resulted in a four part serial, aired around 15 August, 2007 when India celebrated her sixtieth year of independence. The purpose of the interviews was to showcase the sixty Indians who are likely to impact India's next sixty years dynamically. I was one of the sixty selected in this honour roll.
Sanjeev Bhaskar, the celebrated star of British TV was the anchor who interviewed me at work and play at Makaibari. He was positively moved by his time spent at Makaibari and was highly appreciative of the sustainable impulses at play here.
