Summary

This chapter offers the legal background for this book. It reviews the most important provisions of the Constitution and legislation relevant to women's rights, as well as the law that governs NGOs in South Africa. It further provides an analysis of South Africa's obligations to protect women from GBV under international human rights law, and the engagement of NGOs in monitoring the progress. There are some tools and bodies set up by the state to honour the implementation of the Constitution, which are discussed in this chapter, including the sexual offences courts and the Commission on Gender Equality (CGE).
