Summary

Plates 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42

Plate 37: Portrait of the old man seen in profile (also shown in Plates 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36). Compare this with Plates 38 and 39.

Plate 38: To study the isolated contraction of the transverse part of m. nasalis in the same subject. Contraction of the transverse part of m. nasalis is not generally produced in isolation during natural expressive movements, but contributes to the shape of the nose in those subjects of a lascivious temperament or those who are habitually lustful. (It exists in various anatomical variants, depending on the shape of the nose.)

Plate 39: To study the combined contraction of the transverse part of m. nasalis and m. zygomaticus major in the same individual. Combined contraction of the transverse part of m. nasalis, m. zygomaticus major, and m. frontalis: the attention attracted by an object that provokes lascivious ideas and desires.

Plate 40: A portrait, seen in profile, of a man 42 years old, stupefied by the abuse of alcohol; his nose is aquiline. It serves to study the expressions produced by the transverse part of m. nasalis. Compare this to Plates 41 and 42. […]
