Summary

There are two important differences between Alasdair MacIntyre and postliberals over questions of political form and political theology. First, postliberals are more favourable towards administrative centralisation, because it can realise non-liberal political objectives. MacIntyre, by contrast, criticises administrative centralisation and statism. Second, postliberals reject liberal efforts to close off political theology, offering theological alternatives to liberalism. MacIntyre, by contrast, provides a secular account of politics and restricts the scope for theological solutions to postliberal politics. Ultimately, I contend that in spite of their similarities, these differences suggest that postliberals and MacIntyreans are false friends: their disagreements are intractable and set to intensify.
