8 - Systems Approaches to Intelligence
from Part II - Approaches to Studying Intelligence
Summary
Rather than viewing intelligence as a “thing” (general intelligence, mental energy, or whatever), one can view intelligence as a system (Sternberg, 1985b, 1986). As you read in Chapter 2, systems approaches seek to understand intelligence in terms of multiple systems of intelligence. In this chapter, we describe two systems theories of intelligence: Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences (Gardner, 1983, 2011) and Sternberg’s theory of successful intelligence (Sternberg, 1997b, 2003, 2010, 2016).
