6 - Biological Approaches to Intelligence
from Part II - Approaches to Studying Intelligence
Summary
In the last decade, biological approaches have dramatically advanced our understanding of human intelligence. The weight of evidence is overwhelming from large-sample neuroimaging and DNA studies in showing that genetic factors and brain characteristics are major influences on why some people are smarter than others. This progress energizes the hunt for specific genes that influence intelligence, perhaps many hundreds of them, and sets the stage for identifying how these genes work to effect brain structure and function and their development. This chapter reviews key studies that support this conclusion. For a more in-depth examination of these research advances, see Haier (2017).
