Summary

markedly cordate; without stipules. Flowers solitary and terminal or 1–8 in leaf axils, bisexual, actinomorphic or zygomorphic, epigynous. Perianth tubular, with 1 to 3 terminal lobes. Stamens 6–12, in 2 whorls, arising from base or side of the stylar column. Styles 6, united into a column with a 6-lobed stigma. Ovary 6-celled, each cell with many ovules. Fruit a capsule. Embryo very small, in a fleshy endosperm.

Contains 9 genera and about 400 species in temperate and tropical regions.

  • Stems glabrous or nearly so; petiole shorter than lamina or more or less absent; flowers 1–8, axillary 2. Aristolochia

  • Asarum L.

    Perennial, monoecious herbs with a creeping rhizome. Stems very hairy. Leaves alternate, petiole much longer than lamina. Flowers bisexual, solitary, terminal. Perianth regular in 1 whorl, 3-lobed, persistent in fruit. Stamens 12, in 2 whorls, free or nearly so; filaments short. Styles (4–)6, free or united into a column. Fruit a subglobose capsule opening irregularly; seeds flat.

    Contains about 70 species in the north temperate zone, mainly east Asia.
