Summary

The following are the species of Tenebrionidae mentioned by Fabricius, in his published works, as having been described by him from specimens in Dr Hunter's Collection:

Erotylus nebulosus Sp. Ins. 1, p. 158, No. 10 (1781).

Pimelia gibba Mant. Ins. 1, p. 207, No. 3 (1787).

Helops longipes Ibid. p. 214, No. 14 (1787).

Cnodulon nebulosum Syst. Eleuth. 11, p. 13, No. 2 (1801).

The above names are the original names as given by Fabricius, and the references are to the works in which these species were first described.

The following species were described by Olivier from examples in Dr Hunter's Collection:

Diaperis bicornis Ent. III, 55, p. 6, pi. 1, figs. 4a and b (1795).

Tenebrio serratus Ibid. 57, p. 5, pi. 1, fig. 1 (1795).

Pyanisia undata (Fab.)

Coleopterorum Catalogus, pars 28 (H. Gebien, 1911), Tenebrionidae, in, p. 585.

Tropical America.

SYN. Erotylus nebulosus Fab., Sp. Ins. 1, p. 158, No. 10 (1781); Mant. Ins. 1, p. 92, No. 16 (1787); Ent. Syst. 1, 2, p. 40, No. 22 (1792).

Cnodulon nebulosum Fab., Syst. Eleuth. n, p. 13, No. 2 (1801). Helops nebulosus (Fab.), Oliv. Ent. in, 58, p. n, pi. 2, fig. 3 (1795).

H. undatus Fab., Ent. Syst. 1, 1, p. 122, No. 25 (1792); Oliv. Ent. in, 58, p. 11, pi. 2, fig. 4 (1795).

The single example in Cabinet A, drawer 4, under label

Erot. Nebulosus Fabr. pag. 158, No. 10‘

is evidently the type; it has been compared with a British Museum modern example and also with one from the Bishop Collection, and they correspond closely. This type answers the descriptions of nebulosus and undatus given by Fabricius and Olivier, but neither of Olivier's figures exactly represent it; the markings on its thorax are indicated in his figure of undatus and those on the elytra are shown in his figure of nebulosus. According to Dr K. G. Blair, Olivier's figures obviously portray lightly and more heavily marked individuals of the one species. Gebien places this species under Epitragus (Coleopterorum Catalogus, pars 15, Tenebrionidae, 1, p. 25), but Blair considers this an error.
