Summary
Jesus preached a gospel of the kingdom of God but its reception by his audience was mixed at best. Even when welcomed by some people, it was ignored by some people and rejected by others. As a result, we need an account of its means of appropriation by people who welcome it. This calls for an explanation of how the gospel is “hidden,” “secret,” or “mysterious” in the ways suggested by the Gospels and Paul’s undisputed letters. This chapter provides the needed explanation while distinguishing the following: the gospel as mere informational content and the gospel as the redemptive power of God.
