Chapter 18 - Alcohol and Substance Misuse in Men

from Section 4 - Violence, Sociopathy, and Substance Misuse in Men

There are considerable differences between men and women when it comes to substance use and misuse. In general, men commence alcohol and other substance use earlier than women (United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime [UNODC] 2015). The prevalence and the characteristics of alcohol and drug use also differ when comparing men to women. In addition, across the world, men still outnumber women with regard to alcohol and other drug treatment (UNODC, 2015). Box 18.1 summarizes substance use in males and the chapter then takes a lifespan approach to substance use substance use disorders in males.
