Summary

Three days after this took place Dom João Afonso, who was the Count of Barcelos, Vasco Martins de Sousa and Master Afonso das Leis arrived in Coimbra. In the palace where canon law was studied, the university being in this city at that time, they called two witnesses into the presence of a notary: Dom Gil, who was then the Bishop of Guarda, and Estêvão Lobato, a criado of the king. They were told that having sworn on the Gospels they were to speak truthfully about the marriage between King Pedro and Dona Inês.

Each witness was questioned separately. The bishop said first that, while travelling with Dom Pedro and Dona Inês, and being then the Dean of Guarda and the king still a prince, in the town of Bragança the prince summoned him one day to his chamber, Dona Inês also being there. Dom Pedro told him that he wanted to take her as his wife. Without further delay the said lord placed his hand in the dean's hands, as did Dona Inês, and he married them both by verba de praesenti as Holy Church commands. He also said that he saw them live afterwards as man and wife until Dona Inês's death, and that these events could have taken place around seven years previously more or less, but he did not remember which day or month. More about this he did not say.

Similarly, Estêvão Lobato was questioned. He said that the king, while still a prince and during a stay in Bragança, summoned him to his chamber and told him that he had called him because he wished to marry Dona Inês, who was present, and he would like him to be a witness. The Dean of Guarda was already there and, nobody else being present, he took the said lord by one hand and her by another, and married them with those words that are customary at such weddings. He added that he saw them live together until the time of her death. Finally, he said that this happened on the first day of January about seven years earlier, more or less.
