The accumulation of labour attendant on the creation and direction of the missions, in addition to the regular work of the diocese, proved too heavy a burden even for Mgr. Lavigerie's resolute will and untiring energy. The necessity of providing funds for the expenses of the missionary work in heathen countries, and the support of the various training institutions for missioners and sisters of charity, involved an amount of travelling and correspondence that absorbed a large portion of his time, not to speak of the mental strain inseparable from the grave anxieties and responsibilities which weighed upon him. Feeling that he had more work than any one man could do, or at any rate do well, since the office of Apostolic Delegate, which he had recently accepted, required him to absent himself from Algiers more frequently and for a longer period than was compatible with his duties as Archbishop, he resolved upon taking a coadjutor, who should, at least for a time, assist him in the discharge of his episcopal functions. He accordingly obtained permission from the Holy Father to consecrate as Bishop-auxiliary Mgr. Soubiranne, at that time director of the Society for Promoting Education in the East. But unfortunately the climate of Algiers did not suit the new Bishop.
