Summary

This chapter centers on what a theory of acquisition is supposed to do, what type of phenomena need explanation, and whether a single theory is possible for second language acquisition. To focus the discussion, two aspects of Spanish as a second language are examined: (1) staged development of ser and estar; and (2) the acquisition of null subject properties. The chapter concludes with a discussion of why a single theory is not possible and why scholars must use different theories to talk about different aspects of second language acquisition.
