Summary

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17 outlines the need to create frameworks and incentives to support the establishment of public-private partnerships (PPPs) to help society achieve the other SDGs. This chapter explores PPP best practices, including informed and targeted recruitment of PPP participants, proactive development of partnerships, setting expectations and a framework for collaboration upfront, transparent management of IP rights, and using effective alliance management. The chapter explores WIPO Re:Search, a global consortium established in 2011 by BIO Ventures for Global Health, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and 8 leading pharmaceutical companies, to accelerate product development for malaria, tuberculosis, and neglected tropical diseases – diseases that afflict over a billion people worldwide. WIPO Re:Search has resulted in over 100 research collaborations. Its track record demonstrates that, when managed properly, PPPs work and individuals and organizations across the globe – within all sectors – are motivated to combine resources and share risk to address the world’s greatest challenges.
