Summary

A 48-year-old female with Hodgkin’s lymphoma presents to the emergency department with severe abdominal pain. Plain films reveal free air under the diaphragm and she is suspected to have a perforated abdominal viscus. She is taken to the operating suite for an emergent exploratory laparotomy. What specific questions about this patient’s history are important? How might this information affect the patient’s pre-operative workup? What side effects and complications of chemotherapy might impact peri-operative care? What post-operative considerations must be made for cancer patients?
