Summary
Improvements in living conditions, the supply of food, working conditions and services such as education and health care have had a major impact on the health of people in the UK and other countries during recent years (see Chapters Two, Four and Twentythree). Employment and housing can reduce social inequalities, with concomitant benefits to population health and community well-being. The employment needs of young people are reviewed in Chapter Thirteen, with specific focus on the role of social enterprises as an approach in helping people who have problems in gaining access to mainstream employment. Adequate accommodation, security and working conditions are essential for good health and well-being. Chapters Fourteen and Fifteen provide an insight into housing policy in England and Scotland, and the link between appropriate housing and health.
