Summary
The human body relies on its sophisticated and complex immune system to protect it against disease and harm. It can distinguish between self and foreign antigens, and, if appropriate, generates an immune response. The immune system has two different components that can either operate independently or act in synergy to produce an effective response (see Table 69.1):
