Neuropsychiatric disorders are major causes of the global burden of diseases, frequently co-occurring with multiple co-morbidities, especially obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and its various risk factors in the metabolic syndrome. While the determining factors of neuropsychiatric disorders are complex, recent studies have shown that there is a strong link between diet, metabolic state and neuropsychiatric disorders, including anxiety and depression. There is no doubt that rodent models are of great value for preclinical research. Therefore, this article focuses on a rodent model of chronic consumption of high-fat diet (HFD), and/or the addition of a certain amount of cholesterol or sugar, meanwhile, summarising the pattern of diet that induces anxiety/depressive-like behaviour and the underlying mechanism. We highlight how dietary and metabolic risk influence neuropsychiatric behaviour in animals. Changes in dietary patterns, especially HFD, can induce anxiety- or depression-like behaviours, which may vary by diet exposure period, sex, age, species and genetic background of the animals used. Furthermore, dietary patterns significantly aggravate anxiety/depression-like behaviour in animal models of neuropsychiatric disorders. The mechanisms by which diet induces anxiety/depressive-like behaviour may involve neuroinflammation, neurotransmitters/neuromodulators, neurotrophins and the gut–brain axis. Future research should be focused on elucidating the mechanism and identifying the contribution of diet and diet-induced metabolic risk to neuropsychiatric disorders, which can form the basis for future clinical dietary intervention strategies for neuropsychiatric disorders.

In previous works, the radio-X-ray slope in FRI radio galaxies is found to be steeper compared with that in low-luminosity AGNs, indicating different origin of the X-ray emission. Here we reinvestigate this point by compiling a sample of 13 low-excitation radio galaxies (LERG) from 3CR radio catalog of galaxies, where the central engine in LERG is accepted to be a radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF). The core radio and X-ray emissions in all the objects of our sample are detected by VLA/VLBI/VLBA and Chandra/XMM-Newton, respectively. Surprisingly, a shallower slope of Lr – Lx relation () is given by our sample, which demonstrates that the X-ray emission in LERG may come from accretion disk rather than a jet as suggested by previous works. In addition, the slope in the fundamental plane ((log LR = 0.52 log LX + 0.84 log MBH + 10.84) of LERG is found to be well consistent with that reported by Merloni et al. (2003).

It has been controversial for years that the accretion mode is different for bright active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs). In this work, we compile from literature a sample of 32 LLAGNs, consisting 18 LINERs and 14 low Eddington ratio (λ) Seyfert galaxies. A strong negative correlation between the radio loudness RUV and the optical to X-ray spectral index αox is reported for the first time. We further demonstrate that this negative correlation can be understood consistently and comprehensively under the truncated accretion — jet model, a model that has been applied successfully to LLAGNs. We argue that the scatter in the observations is mainly due to the spread in the viscosity parameter α of a hot accretion flow, a parameter that can potentially serve as a diagnosis of the strength and/or configuration of magnetic fields in accretion flows.

MicroRNA (miR)-29b plays a crucial role during somatic cell reprogramming. The aim of the current study was to explore the effects of miR-29b on the developmental competence of bovine somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) embryos, as well as the underlying mechanisms of action. The expression level of miR-29b was lower in bovine SCNT embryos at the pronuclear, 8-cell, and blastocyst stages compared with in vitro fertilized embryos. In addition, miR-29b regulates the expression of DNA methyltransferases (Dnmt3a/3b and Dnmt1) in bovine SCNT embryos. We further investigated SCNT embryo developmental competence and found that miR-29b overexpression during bovine SCNT embryonic development does not improve developmental potency and downregulation inhibits developmental potency. Nevertheless, the quality of bovine SCNT embryos at the blastocyst stage improved significantly. The expression of pluripotency factors and cellular proliferation were significantly higher in blastocysts from the miR-29b overexpression group than the control and downregulation groups. In addition, outgrowth potential in blastocysts after miR-29b overexpression was also significantly greater in the miR-29b overexpression group than in the control and downregulation groups. Taken together, these results demonstrated that miR-29b plays an important role in bovine SCNT embryo development.

Coenzyme Q10 (Q10) plays an important role in the cellular antioxidant system by protecting the cells from free-radical oxidative damage and apoptosis. In the present study, we have investigated the effect of Q10 on the preimplantation development of porcine parthenogenetic embryos, as well as the underlying mechanism. The results showed that 100 μM was the optimal concentration of Q10, which resulted in significantly increased cleavage and blastocyst formation rates and improvement of blastocyst quality. Q10 improved the blastocyst hatching rate and cellular proliferation rate in hatching blastocysts and increased the expression of hatching-related genes. Furthermore, Q10 not only decreased reactive oxygen species production, DNA damage levels, and apoptosis in the blastocysts from H2O2-induced oxidative injury, but also maintained mitochondrial function. Taken together, these results indicate that Q10 has beneficial effects on the development of porcine parthenogenetic embryos by preventing oxidative damage and apoptosis.

We propose a thin accretion disk with magnetically driven winds model to investigate the high jet efficiency phenomenon in lobe-dominated luminous FRII radio galaxies, which was reported by Fernandes et al. (2011) and Punsly (2011). It was found that the temperature of a thin disk with winds was much lower comparing with that of a standard thin disk because the winds take the most of energy released in the disk away, resulting in a much smaller raditive efficiency. Therefore, the jet efficiency can be very high even for conventional jet power. Our model can explain the observations quite well.

Iron is an essential trace element that plays important roles in the cellular function of all organs and systems. However, the function of Fe(II) in mammalian embryo development is unknown. In this study, we investigated the role of Fe(II) during preimplantation embryo development. Depletion of Fe(II) using thiosemicarbazone-24 (TSC24), a specific Fe(II) chelator, rescued quenching of the Fe(II)-sensitive fluorophore phen green-SK. After in vitro fertilization, TSC24 significantly reduced the cleavage rate as well as blastocyst formation. The hatch rate of blastocysts was also reduced with 1 pM TSC24 treatment (20.25±1.86 versus 42.28±12.96%, p<0.05). Blastocysts were cultured in leukemia inhibitory factor-free mouse embryonic stem cell culture medium with or without TSC24, and those with depleted Fe(II) displayed delayed attachment and lost the ability to induce embryoid body formation. To further explore the mechanism of Fe(II) in embryo development, we assessed the expression of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) and OCT4 in the pronuclear and blastocyst stages, respectively. We observed that Fe(II) reduced 5hmC and OCT4 expression, which could be explained by low ten-eleven translocation (TET) enzyme activity induced by TSC24 treatment. These findings demonstrate that Fe(II) is required for mammalian embryo development and that it facilitates the process via regulation of TET activity.

In this study the influence of cell tilting on flow dynamics and heat transport is explored experimentally within a rectangular cell (aspect ratios ${\it\Gamma}_{x}=1$ and ${\it\Gamma}_{y}=0.25$). The measurements are carried out over a wide range of tilt angles ($0\leqslant {\it\beta}\leqslant {\rm\pi}/2\ \text{rad}$) at a constant Prandtl number ($\mathit{Pr}\simeq 6.3$) and Rayleigh number ($\mathit{Ra}\simeq 4.42\times 10^{9}$). The velocity measurements reveal that the large-scale circulation (LSC) is sensitive to the symmetry of the system. In the level case, the high-velocity band of the LSC concentrates at about a quarter of the cell width from the boundary. As the cell is slightly tilted (${\it\beta}\simeq 0.04\ \text{rad}$), the position of the high-velocity band quickly moves towards the boundary. With increasing ${\it\beta}$, the LSC changes gradually from oblique ellipse-like to square-like, and other more complicated patterns. Oscillations have been found in the temperature and velocity fields for almost all ${\it\beta}$, and are strongest at around ${\it\beta}\simeq 0.48\ \text{rad}$. As ${\it\beta}$ increases, the Reynolds number ($\mathit{Re}$) initially also increases, until it reaches its maximum at the transition angle ${\it\beta}=0.15\ \text{rad}$, after which it gradually decreases. The cell tilting causes a pronounced reduction of the Nusselt number ($\mathit{Nu}$). As ${\it\beta}$ increases from 0 to 0.15, 1.05 and ${\rm\pi}/2\ \text{rad}$, the reduction of $\mathit{Nu}$ is approximately 1.4 %, 5 % and 18 %, respectively. Over the ranges of $0\leqslant {\it\beta}\leqslant 0.15\ \text{rad}$, $0.15\leqslant {\it\beta}\leqslant 1.05\ \text{rad}$ and $1.05\leqslant {\it\beta}\leqslant {\rm\pi}/2\ \text{rad}$, the decay slopes are $8.57\times 10^{-2}$, $3.27\times 10^{-2}$ and $0.24\ \text{rad}^{-1}$, respectively.

Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is an independent risk factor for CVD and has been proposed as a marker of vascular inflammation. Polyunsaturated n-3 fatty acids (FA) and several n-6 FA are known to suppress inflammation and may influence Lp-PLA2 mass and activity. The associations of n-3 and n-6 plasma FA with Lp-PLA2 mass and activity were analysed using linear regression analysis in 2246 participants of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis; statistical adjustments were made to control for body mass, inflammation, lipids, diabetes, and additional clinical and demographic factors. Lp-PLA2 mass and activity were significantly lower in participants with the higher n-3 FA EPA (β = − 4·72, P< 0·001; β = − 1·53; P= 0·023) and DHA levels (β = − 4·47, β = − 1·87; both P< 0·001). Those in the highest quintiles of plasma EPA and DHA showed 12·71 and 19·15 ng/ml lower Lp-PLA2 mass and 5·7 and 8·90 nmol/min per ml lower Lp-PLA2 activity than those in the first quintiles, respectively. In addition, lower Lp-PLA2 mass and activity were associated with higher levels of n-6 arachidonic acid (β = − 1·63, β = − 1·30; both P< 0·001), while γ-linolenic acid was negatively associated with activity (β = − 27·7, P= 0·027). Lp-PLA2 mass was significantly higher in participants with greater plasma levels of n-6 linoleic (β = 0·828, P= 0·011) and dihomo-γ-linolenic acids (β = 4·17, P= 0·002). Based on their independent associations with Lp-PLA2 mass and activity, certain n-3 and n-6 FA may have additional influences on CVD risk. Intervention studies are warranted to assess whether these macronutrients may directly influence Lp-PLA2 expression or activity.

In this work, we investigate the power source of the most energetic giant outbursts in MS 0735 + 7421, which released ~ 1062 erg of energy. Due to the very high mean jet power in the cavities (Pjet/LEdd ~ 0.02), we produce several jet formation models based on a relativistic thin disk model, i.e., general BP + BZ mechanisms (model A), Livio's (model B) and Meier's (model C) model, to explain the giant outbursts in AGNs. It is found that the energy provided by both model B and model C are inadequate for an initial black hole spin a0 ~ 0.1, only model A can explain the most violent outbursts in MS 0735 + 7421. But if the initial black hole spin a0 ~ 0.95, model B can also blow up the cavity. The final spin of the black hole is found to be very high in spite of the initial spin.
