Litter-dwelling arthropods play an important role in maintaining forest ecosystem function. This study was designed to understand seasonal variations and diversity of litter-dwelling adult beetles, one of the most diverse groups of arthropods. Sampling was conducted in mixed-wood forests of South Korea between March and December 2019, covering all seasons, including winter. We used a sifting method and a Berlese funnel to collect arthropods living in leaf litter and soil. We collected a total of 5820 invertebrates representing six orders, of which 1422 were beetles representing 24 families and minimum 141 species. Beetle species richness was highest in spring and lowest in summer based on rarefaction and extrapolation. However, beetle abundance was lowest in spring, but abundance was similar among the other seasons. Beetle assemblage composition was correlated significantly with soil surface and atmospheric temperature. The assemblage composition differed among seasons, except between spring and winter, which overlapped slightly. The combined sifting–Berlese funnel method showed great advantages for investigating the diversity of overwintering arthropods. Continued study of the relationship between arthropods and the leaf-litter environment is essential to understand this microecosystem and will increase the chance of discovering new beetle species.

Vertically aligned BaTiO3 nanowire (NW) arrays on a Ti substrate were adopted for use in piezoelectric energy harvesting device that scavenges electricity from mechanical energy. BaTiO3 NWs were simultaneously grown at the top and bottom surfaces of a Ti substrate by two-step hydrothermal process. To characterized the piezoelectric output performance of the individual NW, we transferred a BaTiO3 single NW that was selected from well-aligned NW arrays onto a flexible substrate and measured the electric signals during the bending/unbending motions. For fabricating a piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH), both NW arrays were sandwiched between two transparent indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic films and then packaged with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer. A lead-free BaTiO3 NW array-based PEH produced an output voltage of about 90 V and a maximum current of 1.2 μA under periodically bending motions.

Although blind people heavily depend on working memory to manage daily life without visual information, it is not clear yet whether their working memory processing involves functional reorganization of the memory-related cortical network. To explore functional reorganization of the cortical network that supports various types of working memory processes in the early blind, we investigated activation differences between 2-back tasks and 0-back tasks using fMRI in 10 congenitally blind subjects and 10 sighted subjects. We used three types of stimulus sequences: words for a verbal task, pitches for a non-verbal task, and sound locations for a spatial task. When compared to the sighted, the blind showed additional activations in the occipital lobe for all types of stimulus sequences for working memory and more significant deactivation in the posterior cingulate cortex of the default mode network. The blind had increased effective connectivity from the default mode network to the left parieto-frontal network and from the occipital cortex to the right parieto-frontal network during the 2-back tasks than the 0-back tasks. These findings suggest not only cortical plasticity of the occipital cortex but also reorganization of the cortical network for the executive control of working memory. (JINS, 2011, 17, 407–422)

Licorice extracts are known to exhibit anti-carcinogenic activities. However, chronic licorice consumption can lead to serious side effects due to the presence of considerable quantities of glycyrrhizin, which causes severe hypokalaemia and hypertension. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of a hexane–ethanol extract of Glycyrrhiza uralensis (HEGU), which lacks glycyrrhizin, on the metastatic characteristics of DU145 prostate cancer cells. HEGU inhibited basal and epidermal growth factor-induced cell migration, invasion and adhesion in a dose-dependent fashion. HEGU significantly suppressed the secretion and activation of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9. The secretion of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 was reduced, but that of TIMP-2 was increased in HEGU-treated cells. HEGU reduced the protein levels of integrin-α2, the intercellular adhesion molecule, and the vascular cell adhesion molecule. An active fraction of HEGU was separated via column chromatography, and the structure of the active component, licoricidin, was identified via 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The treatment of DU145 cells with licoricidin induced a reduction in cell migration and the secretion of MMP-9, TIMP-1, urokinase-type plasminogen activator and vascular endothelial growth factor, as well as in the expression of adhesion molecules. These results indicate that HEGU, which contains licoricidin, is a potent anti-metastatic agent, which can markedly inhibit the metastatic and invasive capacity of malignant prostate cancer cells. The observed reductions in the activation of proteases and the levels of adhesion molecules may constitute a component of the mechanisms by which HEGU inhibits the migration and adhesion of prostate cancer cells.

Decision making in an emotionally conflicting situation is important in social life. We aimed to address the similarity and disparity of neural correlates involved in processing ambivalent stimuli in patients with schizophrenia and patients with depression. Behavioral task-related hemodynamic responses were measured using [15O]H2O positron emission tomography (PET) in 12 patients with schizophrenia and 12 patients with depression. The task was a modified word-stem completion task, which was designed to evoke ambivalence in forced and non-forced choice conditions. The prefrontal cortex and the cerebellum were found to show increased activity in the healthy control group. In the schizophrenia group, activity in these two regions was negligible. In the depression group, the pattern of activity was altered and a functional compensatory recruitment of the inferior parietal regions was suggested. The prefrontal cortex seems to be associated with the cognitive control to resolve the conflict toward the ambivalent stimuli, whereas the cerebellum reflects the sustained working memory to search for compromise alternatives. The deficit of cerebellar activation in the schizophrenia group might underlie the inability to search and consider compromising responses for conflict resolution. (JINS, 2009, 15, 990–1001.)

The enhancement of optical transmittance at the air/glass interface of amorphous silicon thin film solar cells was shown by application of a nanoporous polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) antireflection (AR) coating. The PMMA coating was prepared by spin coating of PMMA solution in chloroform in the presence of a small amount of nonane. Because of the difference of the vapor pressure of chloroform and nonane, phase separated structure formed after complete evaporation of both of them during spin coating process. The Corning 1737 glass with the AR coating has high transmittance near 95% from 450-1100nm wavelengths. The amorphous silicon solar cells with the nanoporous PMMA AR coating realize an improvement in quantum efficiency (QE) up to 4% in 450-650nm spectral regions.

Recently, non-volatile polymer memories have been researched as a next generation of non-volatile memory because of its simple structure and easy fabrication process. We found that two types of non-volatile polymer memory have different I-V behavior. First Polymer non-volatile memory with metal / oxide / polymer / metal structure But Polymer non-volatile memory embedded Au Nano-crystal shows different I-V behavior. Polymer non-volatile memory shows NDR(Negative Differential Resistance) Region after threshold voltage and low to high current path at increasing positive and negative bias. We can observe NDR(Negative Differential Resistance) Region on Polymer non-volatile memory embedded Au Nano crystal. We fabricated devices three different type to confirm difference Polymer non-volatile memory with metal / polymer / metal structure, metal / oxide / polymer / metal structure and Au nano-crystal embedded Polymer non-volatile memory. First we fabricated Polymer non-volatile memory with metal / PVK(Poly-n-vinyl carbarzole) / metal structure. first type of device shows ohmic I-V behavior. Second type of polymer non-volatile memory has oxide layer between metal and polymer layer. Oxide layer made by O2 plasma treatment(100W RF power, 100SCCM O2 gas flow) after metal layer deposited. Second type of device has same structure as first device except oxide layer. Second type of device shows I-V behavior similar to Resistive Memory. Resistive non-volatile memory shows low to high current path at increasing positive bias and high to low current path at increasing negative bias. I-V behaviors of second device due to effect of oxide layer between metal and polymer layer. Third type of polymer non-volatile memory we embed Au nano-crystal layer in polymer layer. Au nano-crystal layer embedded by curing process. We deposit 5nm Au layer after spin coated PVK(Poly-n-vinyl carbarzole) layer and curing at 300¡É. We can observe NDR(Negative Differential Resistance) Region and different I-V behaviors with other type of device. Finally we fabricated polymer non-volatile memory embedded au nano-crystal by dispersion method to confirm effect of au nano-crystal. We report difference I-V behaviors polymer non-volatile memory with metal / polymer / metal structure and polymer non-volatile memory embedded au nano-crystals

Many researchers have investigated organic nonvolatile memory devices as one of candidates device for next generation nonvolatile memory because of their low-cost, flexible and simple fabrication. The memory phenomenon in these devices is based on the electrical bistability of the material, which has two resistance states. We report memory effect in organic molecules based on electrical bistability of the materials and the bistable phenomenon was observed in poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) layer, containing a high density of Au nanocrystals and sandwiched between Al electrodes. The device was fabricated on cleaned SiO2. First, Al for the bottom electrode was deposited on SiO2 substrate by thermal evaporation in a vacuum chamber (pressure ∼10−6 torr). The PVK was dissolved with chloroform, spin-coated on the Al electrode, and baked at 120¡ÆC for 2 min to evaporate the solvent away. Subsequently, a 5-nm-thick Au film was deposited on the PVK. Additional PVK was then spin-coated on the Au film and baked. Next, the device was cured at 300¡É for 2 h in air to produce the Au nano-crystals. This device showed good nonvolatile memory characteristics. It was confirmed that it shows several region of current levels, (ION, IOFF, IINTER). When the voltage increased from zero in the OFF state (low conductivity state), the current increased rapidly at the threshold voltage (Vth), and presented a regime of negative differential resistance (NDR) after writing. Moreover ON and OFF states could be set at voltages at Vprogram (or Vp) and Verase (or Ve), respectively, and could be read at 1 V. After the device was programmed by sweeping the voltage from 0 to Vp, the current followed the high conductivity state and stayed in the ON state. And the device was programmed by sweeping the voltage from 0 to Ve, the current followed the low conductivity state and stayed in the OFF state. Furthermore, they exhibited seven different reversible current paths (intermediate states) capable for approving electron charge or discharge on surface of Au nanocrystals by sweeping the voltage from 0 to VNDR. Our results demonstrate that the fundamental parameters of the device were stable; the values of Vth, Vp, and Ve were ∼2.8, ∼4, and ∼8 V, respectively. In particular, this device exhibited excellent nonvolatile memory behavior, with bistability (ION/IOFF) of >1×102 and an intermediate state for multi-bit operation. We suggest that the current conduction mechanism clearly follow space-charge-limited(SCLC) for low conductivity state, thermionic field emission for electron charge(writing) or discharge(erasing), and F-N tunneling after erasing.

Self-sensing and interfacial evaluation were investigated with different dispersion solvents for single carbon fiber/carbon nanotube (CNT)-epoxy composites by electro-micromechanical technique and acoustic emission (AE) under loading/subsequent unloading. Optimized dispersion procedure was set up to obtain improved mechanical and electrical properties. Apparent modulus and electrical contact resistivity for CNT-epoxy composites were correlated with different dispersion solvents for CNT. CNT-epoxy composites using good dispersion solvent showed higher apparent modulus because of better stress transferring effect due to relatively uniform dispersion of CNT in epoxy and enhanced interfacial adhesion between CNT and epoxy matrix. However, good solvent showed high apparent modulus but low thermodynamic work of adhesion, Wa for single carbon microfiber/CNT-epoxy composite. It is because hydrophobic high advanced contact angle was shown in good solvent, which can not be compatible with carbon microfiber well. Damage sensing was also detected simultaneously by AE combined with electrical resistance measurement. Electrical resistivity increased stepwise with progressing fiber fracture due to the maintaining numerous electrical contact by CNT.

A bistable effects of Au nano-crystals embedded in poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) were observed. Subsequently we investigated dependency of the nonvolatile memory behavior on curing temperature for the Au nano-crystals embedded in the PVK. For the study, in the devices of different curing temperatures we measured current-voltage characteristics for the devices and investigated the formation of the Au nano-crystals using cross sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The nonvolatile memory behavior depends on the curing temperature, which is attributed to the suitable formation of the Au nano-crystal.

We report the discovery of three new star clusters in the halo of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822. These clusters were found in the deep images taken with the MegaPrime at the CFHT covering a total field of 2 deg $\times$ 2 deg. The most remote cluster is found to be located as far as 79 arcmin away from the center of NGC 6822. This distance is several times larger than the size of the region in NGC 6822 where star clusters were previously found. Morphological structures of the clusters and color-magnitude diagrams of the resolved stars in the clusters show that at least two of these clusters are proabably old globular clusters.

Assessment of nuclear status is important when a biopsied single blastomere is used for embryo sexing. In this study we investigated the nuclear status of blastomeres derived from 8- to 16-cell stage in vitro fertilised bovine embryos to determine the representativeness of a single blastomere for embryo sexing. In 24 embryos analysed, the agreement in sex determination between a biopsied single blastomere and a matched blastocyst by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was 83.3%. To clarify the discrepancies, karyotypes of blastomeres in 8- to 16-cell stage bovine embryos were analysed. We applied vinblastine sulfate at various concentrations and for different exposure times for metaphase plate induction in 8- to 16-cell stage bovine embryos. The 1.0 mg/ml vinblastine sulfate treatment for 15 h was selected as the most effective condition for induction of a metaphase plate (>45%). Among 22 embryos under these conditions, only 8 of 10 that had a normal diploid chromosome complement showed a sex chromosomal composition of XX or XY (36.4%) and 2 diploid embryos showed mosaicism of the opposite sex of XX and XY in blastomeres of the embryo (9.1%). One haploid embryo contained only one X-chromosome (4.5%). Four of another 11 embryos with a mixoploid chromosomal complement contained a haploid blastomere with a wrong sex chromosome (18.2%). In conclusion, assessment of nuclear status of 8- to 16-cell stage bovine embryos revealed that morphologically normal embryos had a considerable proportion of mixoploid blastomeres and sex chromosomal mosaicism; these could be the cause of discrepancies in the sex between biopsied single blastomeres and matched blastocysts by PCR.

We will show the existence, uniqueness and regularity of global solutions for the Cauchy problem for nonlinear evolution equations with the damping term .

The large optical detection systems that are typically utilized at present may not be able to reach their full potential as portable analysis tools. Accurate, early, and fast diagnosis for many diseases requires the direct detection of biomolecules such as DNA, proteins, and cells. In this research, a glass microchip with integrated microelectrodes has been fabricated, and the performance of electrochemical impedance detection was investigated for the biomolecules. We have used label-free λ-DNA as a sample biomolecule. By changing the distance between microelectrodes, the significant difference between DW and the TE buffer solution is obtained from the impedance-frequency measurements. In addition, the comparison for the impedance magnitude of DW, the TE buffer, and λ-DNA at the same distance was analyzed.

For a diffusion barrier against Cu, tantalum nitride (TaN) films have been successfully deposited by both conventional thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) and plasma assisted atomic layer deposition (PAALD), using pentakis (ethylmethlyamino) tantalum (PEMAT) and ammonia (NH3) as precursors. The growth rate of PAALD TaN at substrate temperature 250° was slightly higher than that of ALD TaN (0.80 Å/cycle for PAALD and 0.75 Å/cycle for ALD). Density of TaN films deposited by PAALD was as high as 11.0 g/cm3, considerably higher compared to the value of 8.3 g/cm3 obtained by ALD. The N: Ta ratio for ALD TaN was 44: 37 in composition and the film contained approximately 8∼10 atomic % carbon and 11 atomic % oxygen impurities. On the other hand, the ratio for PAALD TaN layers was 47: 44 and the respective carbon and oxygen contents of TaN layers decreased to 3 atomic % and 4 atomic %. The stability of 10 nm-thick TaN films as a Cu diffusion barrier was tested through thermal annealing for 30 minutes in N2 ambient and characterized by XRD, which proves the PAALD deposited TaN film to maintain better barrier properties against Cu below 800°.

Synthesis of ‘solid solution’ and ‘core-shell’ types of well defined Co-Pt based nanoalloys smaller than 10nm have been achieved by redox transmetalation reactions. This redox transmetalation are selectively observed only if the redox potential between two metals is favorable. The composition of the magnetic alloys can also be tuned by adjusting the ratio of reactants. Annealed core-shell nanoparticles transformed into mixed nanoalloys with face centered tetragonal (fct) structures, which show large coercivity and ferromagnetism at room temperature. These nanoparticles can potentially be used as an independent single magnetic bit of tera-bit information storage. Also, this kind of redox transmetalation reaction can be utilized as a general process to synthesize various types of nanoalloys with controlled composition in a selective fashion.

Tin oxide has been proposed as a promising alternative anode material for microbatteries. It has been reported that its theoretical volumetric capacity is four times larger than that of carbon-based materials, while its gravimetric capacity is twice as large. In this experiment, optimal Si and Bi doped SnO2 films were prepared with e-beam evaporation to improve both the cycle performance and the reversible capacity. The films with addition of Si only exhibited reductions in aggregation of tin particles and formation of micro-cracks. However, there still remained cracks, which induce capacity loss during cycling. To improve capacity retention, Bi was added with Si to SnO2 films, which exhibited the highest reversible capacity of 200µAh/cm2-µm at 200th cycle. The films doped with Bi and Si were found to be ill-defined and featureless without noticeable particle aggregation and cracks. However, the films that underwent cycling tests showed again aggregated tin particles and formation of cracks, which would induce cell failure during cycling. We believe that some types of Li-Bi phases as mixed-conductor matrices have improved the cycle life.

The Far-ultraviolet IMaging Spectrograph (FIMS) is a small spectrograph optimized for the observations of diffuse hot interstellar medium in far-ultraviolet wavebands (900–1150Å and 1335–1750Å). The instrument is expected to be sensitive to emission line fluxes an order of magnitude fainter than any previous missions. FIMS is currently under development and is scheduled for launch in 2002.
