We present the data and initial results from the first pilot survey of the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU), observed at 944 MHz with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. The survey covers $270 \,\mathrm{deg}^2$ of an area covered by the Dark Energy Survey, reaching a depth of 25–30 $\mu\mathrm{Jy\ beam}^{-1}$ rms at a spatial resolution of $\sim$ 11–18 arcsec, resulting in a catalogue of $\sim$ 220 000 sources, of which $\sim$ 180 000 are single-component sources. Here we present the catalogue of single-component sources, together with (where available) optical and infrared cross-identifications, classifications, and redshifts. This survey explores a new region of parameter space compared to previous surveys. Specifically, the EMU Pilot Survey has a high density of sources, and also a high sensitivity to low surface brightness emission. These properties result in the detection of types of sources that were rarely seen in or absent from previous surveys. We present some of these new results here.

The remnant phase of a radio galaxy begins when the jets launched from an active galactic nucleus are switched off. To study the fraction of radio galaxies in a remnant phase, we take advantage of a $8.31$ deg$^2$ subregion of the GAMA 23 field which comprises of surveys covering the frequency range 0.1–9 GHz. We present a sample of 104 radio galaxies compiled from observations conducted by the Murchison Widefield Array (216 MHz), the Australia Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (887 MHz), and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (5.5 GHz). We adopt an ‘absent radio core’ criterion to identify 10 radio galaxies showing no evidence for an active nucleus. We classify these as new candidate remnant radio galaxies. Seven of these objects still display compact emitting regions within the lobes at 5.5 GHz; at this frequency the emission is short-lived, implying a recent jet switch off. On the other hand, only three show evidence of aged lobe plasma by the presence of an ultra-steep-spectrum ($\alpha<-1.2$) and a diffuse, low surface brightness radio morphology. The predominant fraction of young remnants is consistent with a rapid fading during the remnant phase. Within our sample of radio galaxies, our observations constrain the remnant fraction to $4\%\lesssim f_{\mathrm{rem}} \lesssim 10\%$; the lower limit comes from the limiting case in which all remnant candidates with hotspots are simply active radio galaxies with faint, undetected radio cores. Finally, we model the synchrotron spectrum arising from a hotspot to show they can persist for 5–10 Myr at 5.5 GHz after the jets switch of—radio emission arising from such hotspots can therefore be expected in an appreciable fraction of genuine remnants.

We present a detailed analysis of the radio galaxy PKS $2250{-}351$ , a giant of 1.2 Mpc projected size, its host galaxy, and its environment. We use radio data from the Murchison Widefield Array, the upgraded Giant Metre-wavelength Radio Telescope, the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder, and the Australia Telescope Compact Array to model the jet power and age. Optical and IR data come from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey and provide information on the host galaxy and environment. GAMA spectroscopy confirms that PKS $2250{-}351$ lies at $z=0.2115$ in the irregular, and likely unrelaxed, cluster Abell 3936. We find its host is a massive, ‘red and dead’ elliptical galaxy with negligible star formation but with a highly obscured active galactic nucleus dominating the mid-IR emission. Assuming it lies on the local M– $\sigma$ relation, it has an Eddington accretion rate of $\lambda_{\rm EDD}\sim 0.014$ . We find that the lobe-derived jet power (a time-averaged measure) is an order of magnitude greater than the hotspot-derived jet power (an instantaneous measure). We propose that over the lifetime of the observed radio emission ( ${\sim} 300\,$ Myr), the accretion has switched from an inefficient advection-dominated mode to a thin disc efficient mode, consistent with the decrease in jet power. We also suggest that the asymmetric radio morphology is due to its environment, with the host of PKS $2250{-}351$ lying to the west of the densest concentration of galaxies in Abell 3936.

Using WISE data, we calibrated the W2-W3 colors in terms of star formation rates (SFRs) and applied this calibration to a sample of 1285 QSOs with the highest flux quality, covering a range in redshift from z ˜ 0.3 to z ˜ 3.8. According to our calibration, the SFR increases continuously, reaching a value at z ˜ 3.8 about 3 times higher on average than at lower redshift. This increase in SFR is accompanied by an increase of the BH mass by a factor 100 and a gradual increase of the mean Eddington ratio from 0.1 to 0.3 up to z ˜ 1.5 – 2.0, above which the ratio stays constant, despite a significant increase in BH mass. Therefore, QSOs at high redshifts have both more active BHs and higher levels of star formation activity.

We quantify the statistical evidence of the relation between the inferred morphology and the emission-line activity type of galaxies for a large sample of galaxies. We compare the distribution of the inferred morphologies of galaxies of different dominant activity types, showing that the difference in the median morphological type between the samples of different activity types is significant. We also test the significance of the difference in the mean morphological type between all the activity-type samples using an ANOVA model with a modified Tukey test that takes into account heteroscedasticity and the unequal sample sizes. We show this test in the form of simultaneous confidence intervals for all pairwise comparisons of the mean morphological types of the samples. Using this test, scarcely applied in astronomy, we conclude that there are statistically significant differences in the inferred morphologies of galaxies of different dominant activity types.

EMU is a wide-field radio continuum survey planned for the new Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. The primary goal of EMU is to make a deep (rms ∼ 10 μJy/beam) radio continuum survey of the entire Southern sky at 1.3 GHz, extending as far North as +30° declination, with a resolution of 10 arcsec. EMU is expected to detect and catalogue about 70 million galaxies, including typical star-forming galaxies up to z ∼ 1, powerful starbursts to even greater redshifts, and active galactic nuclei to the edge of the visible Universe. It will undoubtedly discover new classes of object. This paper defines the science goals and parameters of the survey, and describes the development of techniques necessary to maximise the science return from EMU.

We compare the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of radio-loud and radio-quiet AGNs in three different samples observed with SDSS: radio-loud AGNs (RLAGNs), Low Luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs) and AGNs in isolated galaxies (IG-AGNs). All these galaxies have similar optical spectral characteristics. The median SED of the RLAGNs is consistent with the characteristic SED of quasars, while that of the LLAGNs and IG-AGNs are consistent with the SED of LINERs, with a lower luminosity in the IG-AGNs than in the LLAGNs. We infer the masses of the black holes (BHs) from the bulge masses. These increase from the IG-AGNs to the LLAGNs and are highest for the RLAGNs. All these AGNs show accretion rates near or slightly below 10% of the Eddington limit, the differences in luminosity being solely due to different BH masses. Our results suggests there are two types of AGNs, radio quiet and radio loud, differing only by the mass of their bulges or BHs.

At the 2003 Sydney IAU meeting, Marion Schmitz (Caltech, USA) took over the chair of the Commission 5 Working Group Designations, succeeding Helene Dickel. The Working Group Designations of IAU Commission 5 clarifies existing astronomical nomenclature and helps astronomers avoid potential problems when designating their sources. The most important function of WG Designations during the period 2003-2005 was overseeing the IAU REGISTRY FOR ACRONYMS (for newly discovered astronomical sources of radiation: see the website <http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/DicForm>) which is sponsored by the WG and operated by the Centre de Données de Strasbourg (CDS). The Clearing House, a subgroup of the WG, screens the submissions for accuracy and conformity to the IAU Recommendations for Nomenclature (<http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/iau-spec.html>). From its beginning in 1997 through August 2006, there have been 132 submissions and 111 acceptances. Attempts to register asterisms, common star names, and suspected variable stars were rejected. The past three years saw 61 acronyms submitted with 50 of them being accepted. (GIRL - yes; WOMEN - no).

We used radio source catalogues accessible from the CATS database to establish radio continuum spectra for decametric radio sources in the UTR-2 catalogue. In an attempt to find further candidates for high-redshift radio galaxies, we searched the FIRST and NVSS surveys for counterparts of a sample of UTR sources with ultra-steep radio spectra (USS, α ≤ −1.2, S ∼ vα). We derived accurate positions and sizes for 23 of these USS sources. The search for optical counterparts from the APM (object) and DSS (image) databases, as well as infrared and X—ray identifications of these UTR sources are in progress.

Radio sources from the decametric UTR-2 catalog were cross-identified with other radiocatalogs at higher frequencies. We used the CATS database to extract all sources within the UTR beam size (~40’) to find candidate radio identifications. Using the least squares method, we fitted the spectrum of each source with one of a set of curves. We extracted NVSS and FIRST radio images for the radio-identified sources, and looked for a possible relation between size and spectral index.

We describe the most complete, publicly accessible database of radio sources, CATS (“astrophysical CATalogues Support system”). It contains more than 300 catalogues of objects detected in various (mostly radio) wavelength ranges. Apart from catalogues drawn from the most important existing surveys and compilations (e.g. NVSS, FIRST, GB6, IRAS, ROSAT, PGC, MCG), CATS includes the largest low-frequency catalogues published so far: UTR, Culgoora, Cambridge, Miyun, WENSS, TXS, Bologna and Molonglo etc., CATS allows one to operate with these, and to draw samples of objects for the study of a large variety of astrophysical problems. Some modes of access are described here.

We describe the highest-resolution radio observations yet made of relic radio sources. These relics have extremely steep (α ≤ −2.5) spectra and are located in four southern Abell clusters (A 13, A 85, A133, A 4038). VLA images at 1.4 GHz and ∼4″ resolution show a remarkable variety of fine structure like arcs, wisps, plumes, and loops. Integrated polarization fractions range from 2.3% to 16.8%. Deep red CCD images do not reveal any optical object with a brightness and/or position typical of a radio host galaxy. The X-ray centroids in ROSAT images tend to be displaced from the cluster potential wells in the direction of the relics in A85, A133 and A4038, suggesting that some of the X-rays may be inverse Compton or excess thermal emission from the relic itself.

We describe a method to cross-identify and construct continuum spectra for radio sources from decametric surveys with comparatively large positional errors. The 1822 sources from the UTR-2 catalogue (10—25 MHz, antenna beam of ∼40') were cross-identified with entries from other radio catalogues at higher frequencies. Using the CATS database we found accurate positions for 2314 counterparts to UTR sources, as well as a best-fit radio spectrum for most of these. About 350 (or 19%) of the UTR sources appear to be blends of two or more sources.

Radio galaxies are known to exhibit a variety of scales in their structure. First we have the nuclear sources, which so far have not been completely resolved even on the scale of 1/10 milliarcsecond with VLBI observing methods (e.g. Preuss, 1981). Then we have the ‘jets’ (which at some stage break up into ‘blobs’) which are considered to transfer energy from the ‘nuclear engine’ to the outer heads. The latter appear to be the sites of transfer of the collimated jet energy into a diffuse emission region. Despite their usually low brightness these diffuse emission regions dominate the internal energy content in particles and fields, even for the collimated doubles. Note that only 1% of the total energy in Cyg A is in the hot spots (Perola, 1981).

Multifrequency observations with large single dishes are the ideal tool to examine the variation of the shape of the radio spectrum across extended extragalactic radio sources. Three complex low luminosity sources with angular extent 20′ < θ < 30′ have been mapped with the 100-m telescope of the MPIfR at frequencies 2.7, 4.9 and 10.7 GHz (HPBW = 4!4, 2!6 and 1!2 resp.). To extend the frequency range we used published low frequency maps for the spectral comparison, too. Thus at least four maps with angular resolution ≦ 4!4 were available for each source. All maps were (if necessary) corrected for sidelobes, then cleaned from obvious background sources and finally smoothed to the same beam of 4!4 HPBW. To look for spectral curvature a spectrum of the form In S = a1 + a2 In ν + a3 (In ν)2 was fitted to the brightness data for each sampling point of the map. We chose two parameters to characterize the spectral shape. The first is the mean spectral index, , defined as the slope of the fit curve at the geometric mean of the lowest and highest observing frequency. As a measure of the spectral curvature we derived the change of spectral index, Δα, along the fit curve between the lowest and highest observing frequency, i.e. Δα positive for a concave (= flattening) spectrum and vice versa. In the following the results are briefly summarized (see Andernach, 1981, for details).
