An important development has arisen. I have discovered that the last eleven pages of the last story in the book I sent you are crap, ie. faecal matter, to wit shit, either bovine or equine. It don't matter.
Under this same cover you will find five pages—These five pages are to take the place of the last eleven pages in the story called Big Two Hearted River.
You will proceed to detach the last eleven pages of the second section of the story called BigTwo Hearted river and substitute the five pages enclosed.
What have you heard about the book? What is the news? Did the American Mercury send to you two stories.
One called The Three Day Blow.
One called Soldier's Home?
If so can Liveright's brother put them on the road for me. Sending the Soldier's Home to the Dial for instance as they seem disposed favourably towad me if I can believe what it says in Bunny Wilson's review.
Will you accept my apologies for the original ending of the Big Two hearted and believe me when I say, quite sincerely I hope, that nothing of the
sort will occur again?
Shoot me a line will you?
What do they say about the book? What is the news.
Remember, remove the last eleven pages, substituting these five. I do not remember the full book page numbering so am not trying to put that in to confuse you. These are numbered in pencil in the order in which they go.
I have some swell new stories. Long ones.
How the hell are you?
Hadley sends her love.
I hate to bother you with this and if it is too much bother please say so and we’ll turn it over to somebody. When are you coming back?
Thanks ever so god damn much.
The best to Dos.
Tell him to write me.
