cappuccino hugs
a chicory kiss
a dance of sugar, powdered
resplendent
upon beignets
and fingers,
invariably

dreaming
of home, when times
were different
when days were warmer,
comforting,
more full of life
dreaming

of a time
before talk of a
surgery,
a tube,
came to light.

before
hunger, the painful gnaw
rumble, gurgle, grumble, grr
an onomatopoetic chorus
her only lullaby

before awakening now
in this cold room
bland
and bleak
hungry,
like the day before
