Studies in Second Language Acquisition and Cambridge University Press are very pleased to announce that the winner of the 2024 Susan Gass Award for Impact in Second Language Acquisition is Kimberly Geeslin.

In line with the spirit of this award, which was designed to recognize the influence of SSLA’s longtime Editor and overall titan in the field of SLA, Susan Gass, Kim’s impact on the field can be seen on so many levels. Perhaps most notably, her scholarly work over the last three decades was absolutely foundational in advancing our understanding of the intersection of SLA and sociolinguistics. In addition to her ground-breaking and formidable scholarly efforts, she was also a prolific author, a Solomonic editor, a gifted teacher and administrator, and a fiercely supportive mentor. In fact, her generous mentorship has led to generations of academics and practitioners, including many who are now field-leading scholars in their own right. As attested to by everyone who knew her, Kim was a role model for all who aspired to success in academia and in applied linguistics, and she did so while always recognizing the human side of being a scholar.
