Welfare is a Feminist Issue: New York-based Welfare Reform Network is attempting to put a face on the welfare debate by collecting “recipient resumes.” We need to let the nation understand that many AFDC recipients have worked, want to work hard, and need welfare benefits to move out of poverty. Among our own ranks, academics, administrators, graduate and undergraduate students, there are many who have had to rely on this safety net. If you have ever “been on welfare” or know students or colleagues who have, now is the time to urge all to come out of the closet. Call for Papers: Rereading the Canon: Feminist Interpretations of John Paul Sartre. Papers reflecting a range of feminist styles and approaches to Sartre's philosophy are sought for a volume to be published in the Penn State Press series, Rereading the Canon, edited by Nancy Tuana. I am interested in critical feminist discussions of any major aspect of Sartre's philosophy from his early existential writings and notebooks on ethics, to his Critique, biographies, novels, and plays. Papers that address the significance of Sartre's work for feminist theories of social transformation are particularly welcomed. Deadline for submission of completed manuscripts is June 30, 1997. Call for Papers: The Australasian Journal of Philosophy invites submissions for a planned symposium on “Philosophical Aspects of Stigmatized Sexualities.” Sexualities that, even today in many societies, are one way or another stigmatized, have been the subject in the past of philosophical reflection, especially under the heading of “sexual ethics.” Recently, new questions have arisen and some of the old ones have reappeared in new forms. Papers are sought which explore in a philosophical way the ethical, social, political, and scientific issues surrounding stigmatized sexualities, or deal in social constructionist mode with concerns about the ontological and epistemological status of categories such as “homosexuality,”“perversion,” and “deviance,” and their historical and social creation.

Call for Papers for the conference Praxis/Nexus—Feminist Methodology, Theory, Community. How do activists draw on scholarly contributions? How do scholars fit into the community? What is it like to be an activist scholar? These questions will be the focus of this conference. Though not new, they are being approached in new ways.
