Photo taken by Harris Mylonas: “A young boy is playing with a massive Lego statue of Milwaukee Bucks NBA player, Giannis Antetokounmpo, exhibited at the Athens International Airport in Greece. The Lego statue depicts Antetokounmpo wearing the Greek national team’s uniform—he has played for Greece in several European and international basketball competitions. Born and raised in Athens to Nigerian parents, Antetokounmpo was brought up in Sepolia, a working-class neighborhood, and began playing basketball for the youth teams of Filathlitikos in Athens. In 2011, he began playing for the senior team. In 2013, he entered the NBA draft and has since become one of the league’s top stars. Giannis’ story, character, and success has had a profound impact on Greek people’s beliefs concerning their national identity. An overwhelming majority of Greeks now report in opinion polls that you don’t have to be born Greek; you can also become Greek. The photo was taken on January 9, 2023.”
