I esteem it a great privilege to have been invited to read a paper before the Faculty of Actuaries in Scotland. It is many years since the distinguished honour of being elected a Fellow of the Faculty was conferred upon me, and I am afraid that I have not done directly very much to show my gratitude. The Faculty, however, is always indulgent, and will overlook every shortcoming.
