Polar Motion from the Tracking of Close Earth Satellites
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 27 June 2016
Abstract
The methods of using close earth satellites for determining the motion of the Earth's axis of rotation are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the possibility of using laser range observations. Typical error sources in orbit computations are discussed and their influence on the resulting pole positions estimated. Within a few years pole coordinates with an accuracy of about 20 cm and with a resolution of 1 day or even 12 hr can be routinely expected.
