Bursts of Star Formation in Galaxies

A minority of spiral galaxies is currently undergoing bursts of intense star formation. This paper reviews studies that have been made of these galaxies at visible, radio, and infrared wavelengths, with an emphasis on results that have emerged since the IRAS survey.
