Call for Proposal for RIS Special Issue 2020
The editors invite proposals for the 2020 Special Issue of Review of International Studies. Proposals relating to any area of the discipline, theoretical orientation or methodology are welcome. Review of International Studies publishes cutting edge international relations scholarship. While our articles are often focused on breaking new theoretical ground, we particularly encourage contributions that combine conceptual innovation with novel empirical findings. Proposals should focus on the contribution they will make to the discipline. The editors particularly encourage proposals that either outline new debates or establish emerging agendas. We strongly encourage proposals to pay attention to diversity, both in terms of the gender of contributors, and through the inclusion of scholars located outside Australia, western Europe and North America.
The editors will not consider proposals focused on the discussion of monographs (i.e., book forums) as part of this call.
As a guide Special Issues can contain 7-8 papers as well as an agenda setting introduction/conclusion. It is not expected that a special issue will have both an introduction and a conclusion. The maximum length for main articles is 12,000 words. An introduction/conclusion could be shorter than main article length. In total a special issue would be a maximum of 102000 words. The editors are happy to consider proposals to vary these guidelines (e.g., more contributions with shorter word lengths), but we expect Special Issue articles to have a minimum length of 8000 words.
Proposals should contain only the following information:
1. Title of the proposed Special Issue;
2. Name, affiliation and email of the proposed guest editor(s);
3. Name, affiliation and email of contributors;
4. Background and rationale for the proposal (max 500 words) including the expected length of each contribution;
5. Detailed abstracts of all papers (max 300 words per contribution);
6. A work plan – with realistic timeline – detailing when the articles will be submitted, revised, and published.
The successful proposal will be selected by members of the editorial team in consultation with members of the editorial advisory board. The Guest Editors will be responsible for ensuring the submission of contributions by an agreed deadline, selection of referees (in consultation with the editorial team) a well as advising on decisions made after the review process is complete.
Please note acceptance of a special issue proposal does not guarantee publication of individual contributions. Contributions will be subject to peer review in the same way as all individual submissions.
Proposals should be submitted to reviewofinternationalstudies@manchester.ac.uk
The deadline for proposals is Sunday 26 May 2019.
We very much look forward to reading your proposals.
