1 John Dove's attribution of the exclusion to Dr. Johnson's ‘humiliating and sturdy prejudices’ (1832) is not warranted. The Lives also bypass Donne, Herbert, Vaughan, and Crashaw, doubtless because they were all understood to belong to the ‘race of writers’ discussed in the Life of Cowley.
