Il ne paraît point absurde de prétendre que le phénomène de la substitution est au cœur même du problème économique. Tout calcul économique exige en effet, un dosage rationnel et mesuré des ressources dont on dispose, entre les divers besoins qu’elles permettent de satisfaire. Le phénomène de substitution apparaît précisément dans cette répartition minutieuse de nos instruments de satisfaction, dans les corrections et les améliorations que nous lui apportons en vue de retirer des biens matériels, agents de satisfaction, un maximum d’avantages. Pour atteindre en pratique cette position optimale, certains tâtonnements sont inévitables. Il faudra corriger une distribution rarement parfaite au premier essai, ou procéder à des adaptations nouvelles, si la mode, les goûts, la technique, et donc l’efficience des ressources, se modifient. Puisqu’il s’agit de rechercher toujours la répartition la meilleure.
