The other day, I heard that an old friend from Cambridge was gravely ill. Thinking of him, I became aware, belatedly, that he was remarkable in never having expected anything of me, except friendliness. He combines scholarship with tolerance. It is impossible to quarrel with him, though easy to diasagree; rigorous with himself, he is easy with others. He inscribed his books to me, ‘amicitiae causa’. Such men are rare, in anyone's life, and even more rarely deserved.
